MICROSOFT WORD SCREEN INTERFACE AND COMMANDS

Learning outcome: The Microsoft Word screen interface and commands are distinguished and
determined.

Background Information:
Microsoft Word is a feature of the Microsoft Office package designed to process and create
documents like letters, journals and other office or school written materials. The program comes with
special features that make preparation of documents easier, faster and better looking. The MS Office
Word, which is sometimes referred to as Word has greatly affected the way documents are prepared
nowadays. It can be described as revolutionary due to its popularity and usefulness in almost part of
modern life.

Name Function/Use
1. Quick Access Toolbar This contains the Save, Undo, Repeat buttons and is use for
easy access to frequently used commands. You can customize
this toolbar by clicking the dropdown arrow and selecting the
commands you want to add.
2. Title Bar This is the horizontal bar on the top of an active document that
displays the filename of the current document.
3. Program Level Control Located at the right end of the title bar, Minimize, Restore and
Buttons Close buttons.
4. Ribbon It is a set of toolbars at the top of the window in Office programs
designed to help you quickly find the commands that you need
to complete the task. This replaces the menus and toolbars in
previous versions of MS Word.
5. Group This is an area on the Ribbon that contains buttons/commands
organized into groups.
6. Tab It comprises the 7 tabs : HOME, INSERT, PAGE LAY OUT,
REFERENCES, MAILING, REVIEW AND VIEW. I gives you
quick access to the commonly used commands that you need to
complete a task.
7. Rulers These change the format of the document quickly. If the ruler is
not visible, Click View then click the check box next to the ruler
in the Show/Hide group. The Ruler appears below the ribbon.
8. Text Area This is the area where you type your document. The blinking
vertical line is the cursor, which marks the insertion point. As
you type, your text displays at the cursor location. The
horizontal line next to the cursor marks the end of the
document.
9. Vertical Scroll Bar It is located along the right side of the screen that allows you to
move up and down. The horizontal scroll bar is located above
the status bar which allows you to move left and right.
10. Status bar Gives an overview of the current status of the document.
11. View Buttons/Toolbars This enables you to adjust the display views of the document.
12. Zoom Control/ This magnifies or reduces the contents in the document
Zoom Slide window.

STYLES GROUP – Allow you to easily apply consistent formatting to document as well as to quickly
change existing formatting. It also provides structure to your document that can be discerned by a
