Lesson 1

FT125 System Overview

In this Lesson, we will identify the components that make up

Objective: the FT125 Control System

Why this Lesson is Important

This is an important Lesson because the ability to identify the

FT125 components will expedite your ability to troubleshoot
the system.

FT125 System Components

Discussion:
The SIEMENS FT125 system is integrated with a Rockwell
Automation ControlLogix5000™ processor, an XM120
Module, Flex I/O modules, ControlNet, DeviceNet, and
Ethernet Networks, Det-Tronics Fire and Gas Protection, and
Bentley-Nevada Vibration Monitoring System

The HMI (Human Machine Interface) called the FT210

system is Wonderware In-Touch

Control Processes

There are three main process control systems in the FT125:

- ECS or Engine Control System

- PCS or Package Control System
- SIS or Safety Instrumented System
Lesson 1 - FT125 Overview 2

Allen Bradley RSLogix5000 Processor

The processor is a 32-bit controller that combines logic and

data in modular memory.

Controllers have two main internal components:

• Central Processing Unit (CPU): The decision making

component that executes the program stored in
memory.
• Memory: A group of circuit elements where programs
and data are stored.

A Lithium Battery is used to maintain controller memory

(RAM) when power is turned off.

A Flash Memory Card may also be used for project backup

The Chassis of the Control Logix system, also known as the

Control Bus, houses the processor, I/O, and communication
modules for the
system.

Modules may be placed in any slot of the chassis, they are

not slot dependant.

The Netlinx architecture allows data to be broadcast on one

network, travel across the ControlBus, and communicate data
out to a different network, using a common protocol.

Producer/Consumer Model

The backplane allows data to be multicast

(i.e., sent once and received simultaneously by multiple
destinations).
Lesson 1 - FT125 Overview 4

Data….
Producer Consumer

Because of this “broadcasting” or multicasting capability,

Data may be shared between multiple processors in the same
chassis, or across a network without processor intervention,
this is known as the “Produced/Consumed” communications
model.

The three networks, ControlNet, DeviceNet, and Ethernet,

make up the communications model otherwise known as the
Netlinx Architecture.

Gas Generator Control

The GS3/LQ Driver controls the Lube Oil Console

Lesson 1 - FT125 Overview 5

The Moog valve interface converts an analog signal into a

movement signal, allowing the Moog valve on the engine
lube system to change the position of the rams, therefore the
position of the Variable Inlet Guide Vanes

The position on the ram is read back to the controller via a

Rotary Variable Differential Transformer (RVDT) to allow
closed loop control of the VIGV position

System Protection

Det-Tronics Fire and Gas detections systems are utilized in

the FT125. It’s a fire detection and extinguishing agent
release system combined with a hazardous gas monitoring
system, intergraded on a fault tolerant digital communication
network
Lesson 1 - FT125 Overview 6

Det-Tronics Sensors are mounted inside the Enclosure with

the Gas Generator

The Bentley Nevada 3500 system provides continuous on-

line vibration monitoring. There are three vibration sensors
through the Gas Turbine
Lesson 1 - FT125 Overview 7

XM120 Modules

XM120 Modules are used for Over speed protection on all

new units and for combustion acoustic monitoring on DLE
Models only

E-Stop

A “Hard Wired” circuit is integrated into the system to

handle emergencies independent to PLC control. If such
emergencies occur, the circuit would then open.

Emergency stops may be induced by control, however, never

dependent upon control.

The controller may monitor this circuit to inform the HMI

and take further controlled activities
