UAL Level 3 Diploma: Developing A Creative Media Production Project
STATEMENT OF AIMS
Unit 8 is the summative unit in the first year of the two-year qualification. It will
provide students with a measure of self-directed learning through the
completion of a substantial creative media production and technology project.
The unit requires students to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding
developed in Units 1–7, to complete a creative media production project. It will
provide students with a measure of self-directed learning, and an opportunity to
begin to clarify their longer-term goals through their choice of an activity to explore in
greater depth

Section 1: Rationale (minimum of 100 words)
I’ve really enjoyed the first 7 units I didn’t know anything about animation and now
I feel like I have more knowledge on how to make an animation that makes sense,
I now understand motion tweening which I never knew about, perspective and
although I didn’t do mouth boxes, I understand how to use them and make them
synced with audio if I’m using dialogue. There are some things that I didn’t think
about in film including editing which I had a basic understanding of and can now
do some greenscreen work and masking. In photography I’ve thought about how
to use different lighting and light reflectors to create different moods and how to
manipulate light with one of the these.
In my fmp video I want to create a video, consisting of extreme closeup shots of people’s
skin, hair, eyes, and scars if they have any. I will do this by using a DLSR camera and 3-
point lighting, sometimes only using the back light or just the fill light for an effect on the
persons skin and hair. I will also see if I can get coloured lights to add emotion.
At the start there will be a voice over by Brey P-Orrdige and music by Nin Inch Nails that
comes under a Creative commons license meaning that I can use it, but I all I have to do
credit the artist.
The video will naturally loop because it has no real beginning or end and is just constant
extreme close ups of the human body.
Section 3: Evaluation – How you plan to record your progress (minimum of 100
words)
I will write down my thoughts of the project at least every week or if I feel that during that
week there is something very important about the project, I need to write down I will also
mention any changes I make to the project and at the end I will compare my initial ideas with
how they’ve developed in my final script and my storyboard.
Equipment Required
Camera
People
I will be using Premier pro for editing.
Resources Required
I will need 2 people.
Sound will consist of only ambient music. (Ghosts by Nine Inch Nails can be used
without copyright due to it being under a Creative Commons licence).
Voice over of Breyer P-orridge.
I will be using a DSLR camera from home.
Filmed at college in the green screen studio.
Skills to develop/learn
I will be developing my skills in editing in premiere, filming and planning skills.
1. Do something you enjoy – look back on projects this year and think about
what skills you’ve learnt and which you have really enjoyed. What job would
you like to do in the future? How can you apply it to your project? Pick an area
which you can connect with.
LOVE YOUR PROJECT
2. Do lots and lots of research – primary and secondary are both essential.
Use a wide range of methods and resources, such as questionnaires,
surveys, interviews (Primary), and researching the work of professional
practitioners and techniques (Secondary).
3. Manage your time – 9 weeks of practical work is not long. Just think how
fast this year has gone so far. Plan ahead and don’t fall behind. MAKE USE
OF INDEPENDENT STUDY TIME.
4. You must document everything what happens as you go along. Your entire
journey from start to finish should be fully recorded. Describe and analyse as
you go along. Every aspect of your project should be fully considered. Your
Planning and Schedule will be vital to the success of your FMP
5. Research, design, experiment, build, evaluate. Your project should evolve
over the allotted time. Be flexible and adaptable if your FMP decides to go in
a different direction than first intended. Ensure you record all developments as
the project develops.
6. Critically analyse and evaluate – this will refer to the research you undertake,
the pre-production, production and post-production. Don’t just describe but
analyse, interpret, research and evaluate.
8. You are being graded against FOUR Learning Outcomes, so you need to
ensure that you do the very best in each of them to achieve the grade you
may require, so pay close attention to all parts of the FMP. Remember that
the lowest awarded grade for any Learning Outcome will be the final grade
for the FMP unit.
