Unit 8: Developing a creative media production project

The Final Major Project (Year One)

STATEMENT OF AIMS

Unit 8 is the summative unit in the first year of the two-year qualification. It will
provide students with a measure of self-directed learning through the
completion of a substantial creative media production and technology project.

The unit requires students to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding
developed in Units 1–7, to complete a creative media production project. It will
provide students with a measure of self-directed learning, and an opportunity to
begin to clarify their longer-term goals through their choice of an activity to explore in
greater depth

Name
Devon Dimond

Disciplines
(primary/secondary Video, sound
)
(e.g. video,
animation, sound,
photography
Project (e.g. short
narrative film, Experimental short film
experimental short
film, experimental
animation,
cinemograph, time-
lapse etc. )
Section 1: Rationale (minimum of 100 words)

Before I started this course, I had experience with cameras, editing and photoshop
from my time doing GCSE media. This course has helped me expand on these
skills and learnt new skills like animation and after effects and because of the new
skills learnt in after effects I decided to go down the experimental video for my
project. Out of all of the different skills you learn in this course my favourite is video
and film. By making an experimental short film I can improve my video skills and
editing skills.

Section 2: Project Concept (minimum of 200 words)

For my project I would be experimenting with Video Copilots “saber” plug in for
adobe after effects to create fun effects for my experimental short film that will be
themed after Star Wars. My short film will be based on the theme of colour and
movement by having 3 actors do a choreographed fight with toy lightsabres in a
dark environment (most likely a forest) with coloured lighting that will reflect off the
actors and the environment around them and because the video needs to loop
what will happen is my main character will fight one enemy and defeat him then a
second one will appear and the main character will defeat him and then the first
enemy that he though he defeated will get up and then it’s a constant cycle of him
repeatedly fighting and defeating the two enemies one after the other. There will
be no talking in my film only the natural sound and sounds added in post-
production. For this project I will need to do a location recce, risk assessment,
storyboard and a call sheet. This will help me smoothen out my ideas for the
choreography fight and make use of the props to their full extent.

Section 3: Evaluation – How you plan to record your progress (minimum of 100
words)

I plan to record my progress at the end off each week. I will take notes throughout
the week on what progress I have made and then write them all up on my
Production diary tab on my Weebly site. This way I can spend all week focusing on
making the film and then write about all progress made at the end of the week.

Proposed Research Sources

For my research sources I will use primary and secondary sources to focuson how
people fight with swords or fight scenes from the Star Wars films to help me make
a smooth choreographed fight and what colours to uses for the lightsabers to
make a colourful scene
Primary Research
For primary research I will create a survey asking about what colour and what
colours will work well against each other. I will also ask who their favourite
lightsaber user is their favourite so I can understand what fighting style the
audience will enjoy

Secondary Research
An example of a smooth choreographed fight is Anakin vs obi-wan from “revenge
of the Sith”.
https://youtu.be/AmR5LoyZ4jw - this is a fight choreographed and performed by
professional fencers. I like this because it’s a smooth duel that is performed
amazingly and I will take inspiration from this to hopefully make a clean duel.

Equipment Required

For my project I will require a camera, a computer that can run Adobe premiere
pro and after effects I will also need the “saber” after effects plug-in. Lighting
equipment.

Resources Required

Resources required
 3 or 4 toy lightsabers.
 A Nice open space for the actors to perform on
 A toy blaster gun ( because one on the enemies will use a blaster so that I
can experiment with blaster physics in after effects.)

Skills to develop/learn

Currently I am learning the ins and outs off the “saber” plug in so I can use it as
efficiently as I can for my project. I will also need to direct my project so I will need
to learn to direct properly.

Personnel and responsibilities

My actors will be 16-17 y/o Male and Me who will be behind the camera and
because only two actors will be on scene at the same time so the one who is not
currently in shot will assist me with lighting and camera.
Intended audience and context

Because my project is themed after Star Wars which was first released in 1977
and is still continuing currently. That gives me a wide target audience that my
project is aimed at.

How my project will ‘loop’

The main character will fight the 2 enemies over and over again. When he
defeats/knocks one down the other one will get back up and it will keep repeating.

How to successfully complete a final major project

1. Do something you enjoy – look back on projects this year and think about
what skills you’ve learnt and which you have really enjoyed. What job would
you like to do in the future? How can you apply it to your project? Pick an area
which you can connect with.
LOVE YOUR PROJECT

2. Do lots and lots of research – primary and secondary are both essential.
Use a wide range of methods and resources, such as questionnaires,
surveys, interviews (Primary), and researching the work of professional
practitioners and techniques (Secondary).
3. Manage your time – 9 weeks of practical work is not long. Just think how
fast this year has gone so far. Plan ahead and don’t fall behind. MAKE USE
OF INDEPENDENT STUDY TIME.

4. You must document everything what happens as you go along. Your entire
journey from start to finish should be fully recorded. Describe and analyse as
you go along. Every aspect of your project should be fully considered. Your
Planning and Schedule will be vital to the success of your FMP

5. Research, design, experiment, build, evaluate. Your project should evolve

over the allotted time. Be flexible and adaptable if your FMP decides to go in
a different direction than first intended. Ensure you record all developments as
the project develops.

6. Critically analyse and evaluate – this will refer to the research you undertake,
the pre-production, production and post-production. Don’t just describe but
analyse, interpret, research and evaluate.

7. Listen to advice from your lecturers in formative assessment sessions

throughout the project. You might just find that as we are used to marking
work we know what the requirements are to make good/exceptional projects.
Remember, your work will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, so aim
for the best grade you can and take advice on board when given.

8. You are being graded against FOUR Learning Outcomes, so you need to
ensure that you do the very best in each of them to achieve the grade you
may require, so pay close attention to all parts of the FMP. Remember that
the lowest awarded grade for any Learning Outcome will be the final grade
for the FMP unit.
