Chapter 2-Statics

1) The resultant of a system of forces is a single force that has the same effect on a body as the entire system of forces. 2) Graphical and analytical methods can be used to determine the resultant. The parallelogram law states that the resultant vector is represented by the diagonal of the parallelogram formed by the original force vectors. 3) The triangle law, also called tip-to-tail addition, represents the resultant as the vector formed by placing the tail of one vector at the head of the other.

Armost any system of known forces can be resorved into

Graphical vector addition reguires the drawing of-graphicaily
the vectors to some scale in
iheir given direction. The resultant can then-be *"r.ur.d or
scated from the
drawing. Examples of graphical method are the Parattetqii tr*
and Trianate
Law. Alternativeiy, in the analytical method, one uses tnisameiIJ"h";';#;
roughly to scaie and then solves mathematically. nnaryticat
