Phasing during Remove and Install

Correct phasing of the spiders on each end of the shaft is important. Phasing prevents driveline vibration,
failure of the torque converter, and failure of the transfer gear housings. Phasing also prevents other similar
damage.

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sisweb... 17/03/2023

Illustration 3 g06553313
(1) Correct phasing of drive shaft
(2) Incorrect phasing of drive shaft

On most off-highway trucks with rigid frames, many Caterpillar drive shafts can be assembled only when all
the parts are correctly aligned. Commonly, the tubes of drive shafts have a master spline tooth and a pin in
the yoke assemblies to ensure correct alignment. Check that drive shaft assemblies that do not have splines
with master spline teeth are correctly phased during assembly. Correct phasing is completed by aligning the
timing marks (arrows) on the tubes and yoke assemblies. Drive shafts that are repaired by independent
rebuilders to ensure that the drive shafts have been correctly phased.

Cleaning

NOTICE

Do not submerge the drive shaft in water or cleaner. The water and the
cleaner can destroy the seals and internal components of the drive
shaft. Water and cleaner may only be used to clean the surface.

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sisweb... 17/03/2023

Use a proper lifting device to provide safety to the operator. Also, use a proper lifting device to prevent
damage to the part when you lift the part

Remove the drive shaft from the machine. Remove the U-joint from the drive shaft before cleaning and
inspection. Use caution during removal of the U-joint, the bearing caps on the U-joint may fall. Do not
reuse bearing caps that have been dropped due to contamination. Clean the surface with a solvent that
has a petroleum base. Remove excess solvent with a clean, dry paper towel to remove any deposits or oil.

Inspection on U-Joint and Drive Shaft for Reusability

NOTICE

Pulling slip shafts apart is not endorsed by driveline approved part

suppliers and Caterpillar.

Also, drive shafts are not to be disassembled and inspected; therefore

no inspection criteria is provided. If a dealer or customer has torn
down the drive shaft they would need to replace it with a new drive
shaft.

The drive shaft itself is expected to last 2 rebuilds. U-joints are to be replaced at each powertrain/
transmission rebuild.

Illustration 4 g06533623

Illustration 5 g06553106
Paint discoloration due to overheating, DO NOT USE PART AGAIN

Check U-joint bearing cap for any discoloration of the paint. If U-joint bearing cap is discolored, the U-joint
is at end of its life and must be replaced. Always replace U-joints on both sides of the drive shaft. If only one
U-joint is replaced, it could lead to an imbalance in the drive shaft assembly and will lead to an early hour
wear out failure. Refer to 5.

Illustration 6 g06553110
Typical example of material under bolt is deformed and flaking, DO NOT USE PART AGAIN

Inspect for loose bolts. If any bolts are loose, tighten to the torque specification. If material under bolt is
deformed or flaking, replace u-joint.

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sisweb... 17/03/2023
938G WHEEL LOADER 8RS00611-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY 3126 ENGINE(X... Page 9 of 27

During the removal and installation procedure, contamination or damage often occurs without the
knowledge of the technician to the damage. This damage can substantially reduce the remaining service life
of the U-joint. Reduction of the remaining service life will lead to a failure after inspection. The potential for
the problems is so high that a criterion for the inspection during removal has not been offered.

Do not remove bearing caps solely to look for washers.

When reassembling reassure that bearing cap seal is in the correct position.

Free Play

If necessary, compare the free play with a new U-joint.

If a U-joint free play is excessive then DO NOT USE PART AGAIN.

Backlash in the drive shaft split spline can be detected by hand. If backlash is perceptible by hand, there is
too much wear and the drive shaft would need to be replaced.

Do not use part again if there is any backlash.

Roughness

The universal joint cannot be reused if it is not smooth. If necessary, compare the smoothness of movement
with a new U-joint.

Cracks

Visually inspect the bearing caps, the cross shaft/ trunnion bearing journals, and yokes for cracks.

Do not reuse any parts that are cracked.

Liquid Fluorescent Inspection

Personal injury can result from improper handling of chemicals.

Make sure you use all the necessary protective equipment required to do
the job.

Make sure that you read and understand all directions and hazards
described on the labels and material safety data sheet of any chemical
that is used.

Observe all safety precautions recommended by the chemical

manufacturer for handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals.

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sisweb... 17/03/2023
938G WHEEL LOADER 8RS00611-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY 3126 ENGINE... Page 10 of 27

Tooling for this method consists of a penetrant and a developer. The surface must be clean and dry to use
this method. Follow the steps below to use the liquid fluorescent inspection to check for cracks.

1. Refer to the section "Cleaning" to clean the drive shaft assembly properly. Cleaning must be done
prior to inspection.

2. Spray the penetrant on the surface under inspection. Allow the penetrant to remain on the surface for 5
to 30 minutes, this will allow the penetrant to penetrate the smallest cracks.

3. Once the penetrant is allowed to settle into the cracks, the excess penetrant must be removed from the
surface. Use a clean moist paper towel to remove the penetrant. Take care not to wash the surface
excessively. If too much penetrant has been removed, repeat from Step 1.

4. Tap the surface with a clean, dry paper towel without lint to remove excess water.

5. Check the surface with an ultraviolet lamp group, thisThis will highlight the location of any cracks or
damage.

6. Spray and coat the developer onto the entire dry surface. Use compressed air to reduce drying time.
Once the developer has been applied and the developer has dried, a minimum time for developing of
10 minutes is required. During this time, the developer will draw the penetrant from the cracks to the
surface. Cracks should become visible during the 10 minute time for developing.

Small cracks are permitted in the welded areas. The small cracks are shallow cracks in the weld that do not
affect the integrity of the drive shaft.

If any other cracks that will affect the integrity of the drive shaft are found, then DO NOT USE PART
AGAIN

Assembly of the U-joints and Drive Shafts

Bolt Torque

Be sure that all bolts are tightened correctly to the specified torque. The bolts should be tightened in an
alternating X pattern at assembly.

Lubrication

Use proper lubrication for U-joints and for the drive shaft slip splines. The intervals should depend on the
application and the severity of the environment. Only on U-joints and drive shaft with grease fittings, use the
correct amount and the correct type of uncontaminated lubricant during assembly to prevent the following
problems:

• Repeated joint bearing failures

• Failures during low hours

• Failures in the support bearings

• Slip spline galling

• Seizure

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sisweb... 17/03/2023
938G WHEEL LOADER 8RS00611-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY 3126 ENGINE... Page 11 of 27

U-Joints

Use CAT Utility Grease NLGI 2 (-20 to 140°C/ -4 to 284°F) without molybdenum sulfide for best
performance. Another lithium based grease without molybdenum sulfide can be used.

NOTICE

Grease with molybdenum sulfide additives will accelerate wear out of

U-joints with rolling elements bearings. Also Cat Ball Bearing Grease
is NOT compatible with the grease inside the U-joints.

Use a manual gun or a battery operated grease gun with a flow rate of <200g/min to apply grease.

NOTICE

Do not use a pneumatic operated grease gun. Pneumatic guns apply

grease too fast and risks blowing out seals.

Grease U-joint every 1000 hrs of machine operation. Apply grease until it purges past all 4 seals. When the
weight of the drive shaft is on one trunnion, it is not likely that the grease will purge. In this scenario the
drive shaft will have to be rotated and the U-joint reapply grease in order to purge the grease from that
trunnion.

Drive Shaft Slip Spline

Use (CAT Extreme Application Grease 2 NLGI 2 (-15 to 140°C/ +5 to 284°F) with 5% molybdenum
sulfide) or (Cat Prime Application Grease NLGI 2 (-20 to 140°C/ -4 to 284°F) with 3% molybdenum
sulfide) for best performance. Any lithium base grease may be used, but a molybdenum sulfide additive
grease will extend life of the spline.

Use a manual gun or a battery operated grease gun with a flow rate of <200g/min to apply grease.

NOTICE

Do not use a pneumatic operated grease gun Pneumatic guns apply

grease too fast and risks blowing out seals. Pneumatic guns can also fill
the cavity up too fast and cause the slip shaft to not compress.

Grease slip shaft every 2,000 hrs of machine operation.

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sisweb... 17/03/2023
938G WHEEL LOADER 8RS00611-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY 3126 ENGINE... Page 12 of 27

NOTICE

Do not over grease slip shaft because it could fill up the entire cavity
and prevent the shaft from compressing or extending.

Leaks

Spider Assemblies Without Grease Fittings

After the first 500 hours there may be some grease on the outside of the seals that was left from the original
assembly of the spider and bearing. Some assemblies are overfilled with grease.

Do not use the part again if there is evidence of grease that is leaking past the seals.

Spider Assemblies With Grease Fittings

Normal lubrication procedures for spider assemblies with grease fittings force old grease out of the bearings
past the seals. The forcing of old grease past the seals purges the old grease and contamination out of the
bearing.

Fill with new grease until new grease is visible past all 4 bearings and seals.

Remove grease from external of shaft

Balancing
This section defines acceptable limitations for balancing drive shaft assemblies on models called out in this
document.

Note: Balancing the drive shaft to acceptable limitations when replacing universal joints is necessary to meet
drive shaft and universal joint life.

Required balancing is for equipment with high speed Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) drive shaft otherwise
premature failure will result. Examples of high speed drive shaft equipment are Off-Highway and On-
Highway trucks where the drive shafts frequently rotate over 1,000 RPM frequently.

Optional balancing is for equipment used in high cyclic application drive shaft. An example of this is a
wheel loader operating in a forward and backward movement frequently where the drive shaft will not rotate
more than a few hundred RPM.

Procedure

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sisweb... 17/03/2023

(A) The balance weight must be placed no closer than 25.4 mm (1.00 inch) from the center of the radial weld on both ends of the
drive shaft.
(1) Stamp the letter B in the indicated location if no balance weights are necessary.

1. Drive shafts with slip joints and drive shafts with welded yokes must meet acceptable symmetry
conditions. 2.29 mm (0.090 inch) symmetry is considered within criteria of acceptance.

2. The planes of correction must be as close to the end of the drive shaft assembly as practical.

3. Weights that are welded to the tubing must not be positioned closer than 25.4 mm (1.00 inch) from the
center of the radial weld. Positioning is shown in Illustration 7.

4. Weights must not be stacked on each other.

5. Weights must be aligned with the axis of the drive shaft and electrode to prevent metal expulsion.
Heating that is not uniform may alter the adhesion and mechanical characteristics of the weld.
Positioning is shown in Illustration

6. Distortion, runout, or unbalance can be caused by excessive heat. The excessive heat is generated from
repeated welding of the same balance weight. Therefore excessive heat shall be avoided.

7. Drive shafts with slip joints should be balanced with a fully collapsed spline connection unless the
print states otherwise.

8. Eight is the maximum number of balance weights that should be applied to correct imbalance.

9. A drive shaft that does not need the application of balance weights, must be identified with a letter B.
The letter B should be stamped on the flange diameter of the drive shaft. Illustration 7 shows the
location for stamping the letter.

10. Balancing should be completed at the correct speed Revolutions Per Minute (RPM). Refer to section
"Balancing Formula for Drive Shaft".
