it is suitable with application field such as CAD,digital design,GIS and so on. The
resolving rate is 2540 line/inch, the precision has two kinds these are 0.203mm and
0.127mm, it supports more than 30 kinds of standard data format, its order style is
compatible with the major same kind productions, it can connect with mutual mainstream
applications software that is in the market; the breadth is from A2 to A00; the cursor or
pen can be chosen as the tools of catching point, and can be compatible with the function
of mouse. The digital panel can be chosen photic or unphotic. You can also have the
special style calomp made by order.

The Requirement Of System

Richpeace digitizer has a RS-232 serial interface that can be connected with PC or
Sun work station, so you can compose a digital system only with a computer that is not
below 486 with serial port and a set of applications software that can be connected with
digitizer

The components of digitizer

Richpeace digitizer is composed with the following parts:
●digital panel
●major control box
●catch point tools
(1) Digital panel
The digital panel is the principal part of the digitizer, its surface is white, and the
around have frames and angles; the power switch is located in its left frame‟s
outer-flank; its back is black and has two backboards for fixing the bracket; the panel
also has active area and menu area. ( as figure 1and 2)

figure 1 elevation of digitizer

The active area is a rectangle area with four right angles to show its area on the white
digital panel, the digital operation can be operated only in this area, the breadth is from 18”
ⅹ 24” to 42” ⅹ 60”.
The menu area is located in upper of middle of digital panel; you can use it to setup the
parameter you need. (the using method is in the chapter of setting digitizer using menu)
(2) Main control box
The main control box is located at the back of digitizer, there are main control panel
and other things in the box (as figure 2); there are power supply, cursor/pen, the connecter
of serial port and indicator lights of the power/reset switch on its outer side, and be marked
with Chinese and English separately; the indicator lights of the power is green, when the
power switch is on, the green light lightens; the reset switch and the indicator lights of
power use the same key, use the thumb to press the green vitreous body with a little
strength without releasing, the reset switch will be in the connecting state(the using
method of reset switch is in the “reset digitizer chapter”).
(3) Catching point tools
The Richpeace digitizer supplies two catching point tools for you to choose, they are
pen and cursor (as figure 2), usually the cursor is chosen as standard configure; there are
16 keys on the cursor (every key corresponds different key code value in the coordinate
output format) and limpid organic glass lens with spider line and red indicator lights; if the
digitizer is in the working state, the cursor is in the active area then the red indicator light
will lighten, if the cursor is moved out of the service area or is driven up to a certain height,
the red indicator light will be off.
The pen has two switches, they are the pen point and the tonguelike key, and it is
analogous to the left and right buttons of the mouse.

the checking whenever it is needed.

Setting applications and digitizer
Because the different applications software requires different settings of digitizer, so
the parts of applications software that are about configure of digitizer should be setup.
Some applications software give the type of the emulate digitizer, and some programs
give several optional communication parameter, including baud rate、checkout、data bit
and so on. Menu and order can be used (please see the „setup digitizer‟ chapter to get the
particular contents) to setup the digitizer.
The setup of applications software is in the chapters of „setting table of major
applications software menu‟ and „setting table of common configure menu‟, if there are no
applications software or required configure in the list please get touch with software
manufacturer, and you can also get touch with us; after knowing the requirement of the
configure of applications software, you can use Richpeace order or Digitizer order to setup
the digitizer (the method of the setting of Richpeace order and Digitizer order are in the
chapter „using order to setup digitizer‟), if there have names of applications software or the
required configure in the list, please setup digitizer through the menu according to the
requirement in the list (the method of using menu is in the chapter „setup digitizer by using
menu‟).
The basic using method of catching point tools
(1) Using cursor
It is not necessary to make the cursor close to the surface of digitizer, don‟t drive up
the cursor higher than 6mm in the active area, namely, smooth out the digital drawings on
the active area, digitizer can work well if the thickness of the digital drawings is not over
6mm.
When you use the cursor, aim the spider line which is on the lens of digitizer at the
point that you want to choose, in order to reduce the errors during the digital process, you
should observe the spider line just from the top of lens as you can. Make sure that the
spider line superpose the digital point you choose, then press the key „0‟ on the cursor or a
key that is defined by software or by the user, in this way, a pointing is completed.
(2) Using pen
The using of the pen is almost the same as the using of cursor, no more than, the
penholder should be perpendicularity to the surface of digitizer as you can, and there are
only two keys on the pen.
(3) Operation of drawing line
When you use cursor or pen to draw a line, don‟t use the underside of the cursor or
the pen point rub the paper, just catch a point at the starting place, then drive up cursor or
pen a little and move it to the ending place to catch a point (it is much more different from
the using of mouse).

Three Setting Digitizer

(1) Common Working Modes Of Digitizer
Point Mode
When the cursor is in the active area, you press down the key of the cursor at a time,
and then the digitizer sends a double coordinate to the computer, no pressing no sending.
Line mode
The cursor is in the active area, press down the key of the cursor, the digitizer sends
coordinates continuously; when the key is released the digitizer sends another pair of
coordinates, but the key assignments is the one when the key is not pressed. It sends no
data of coordinates unless the key is pressed.
Stream Mode
When the cursor is in the active area, the digitizer will send coordinates continuously
no matter the keys are pressed or not. Some manufacturers call this mode is Run Mode or
Continuous Mode.
Switch Stream Mode
When the cursor is in the active area, the digitizer will send coordinates continuously
to computer when the keys are pressed down, release the key then the sending stops.
Some manufacturers call this mode is Switch Mode.
Request Mode
When the cursor is in the active area, and computer sends a request code to the
digitizer then the digitizer sends a pair of coordinates to the computer. The crytic request
mode of Richpeace digitizer is R, in this mode when the computer sends a letter „R‟ each
time and then the digitizer sends back a pair of coordinates.
Increment Mode
The increment mode can be used in the line mode、stream mode and the switch
stream mode. The digitizer sends the coordinates of the current point to the computer just
when the cursor is moved to setting the increment step length and suitable with the need
of the current working mode.
In the continuous increment mode, when press any key of cursor coordinate of the
point is the starting point of increment, and then send out the coordinate. After that, when
move the cursor to add a step length then the digitizer sends a pair of coordinate data to
computer. When press any key of the cursor once again then the coordinate of current
point is as the ending point and send out the coordinate; so the starting point and the
ending point circle again and again.
In the switch stream mode and the line mode, press any key of the cursor then the
coordinate of the point is as the coordinate of increment starting point. Move the cursor
with the key that is pressed, the digitizer sends out a pair of coordinates data when the
setting increment step length is added, when release the button of cursor even if it is not at
the next increment step length the digitizer also sends the current coordinate data, the key
code is the one of line increment mode is the one the key of cursor is not pressed. The key
code of the track mode is the one when the key of cursor is pressed.
Delta mode
The following are some traits of the delta mode:

8
9

a. The data that is sent is the increment that is from the current point to the previous
point.
b. The cursor has four azimuths (or four quadrants, at illus the following) when it moves
from the current point to the other point, because the coordinate has symbol so this
working mode requires the output format of data that sent by digitizer to be the ASCII
format with sign bit.

[-, +] [+, +]
[-, -] [+, -]

Figure 10 using menu

c. If the increments of both of the x、y directions are zero then digitizer sends out no
coordinate. Only when cursor moves from the current point to augment X or Y
coordinate increment not to be less than 1 or when the key of cursor is pressed then
the data could be sent out.
Halt Mode
The digitizer can receive the order but cannot send out coordinate data until setup a
new working mode.
(2) Controlling the tone of key-press with menu
On the menu of the panel of digitizer, there is a block that can enable or
disable the tone of key-press. When the spider line on cursor aims at the center of the
block and press button „0‟ then the tone of key-press is turned off, if press the key
again the tone of key-press would be turned on again.
(3) Resetting Digitizer
Press the round key (also called it “reset switch”, the key with indicator light) with the
sign „Reset‟ on the main control box of digitizer and don‟t release the key, and then,
turn on the power supply of digitizer at the same time. Release the switch when the
ringing of buzzer is over, then, the digitizer would work as the original settings.
The original settings: 9600 baud rate, 8 bits non- verification, one stop bit,
resolution 1000LPI, output-format 23, stream mode, output-speed is 40 pairs
coordinates /second, original coordinate point is in the lower left corner.

9
10

Just operate B , E on the menu continuously then you can save the original
settings if you want to
Setting digitizer with menu
The menu of digitizer is at the upside of the center of panel. There are 11 blocks
altogether including one tone controlling block, one menu starting block B 8 numeral
blocks (from 0 to 7), one menu ending block E .

The following is using method:

(1) Aim the spider line of cursor at the center of one character (see figure 10), press
key „0‟ if you can hear a tone and indicates the operation is in effect.
(2) Choosing block must from left to right of menu, the key „0‟ must be pressed once
when a block is chosen each time.
(3) Every operation must be start from B then choose two blocks successively and
then press key E again to end.
E.g. the following is the process of setting 0, 3 configure:
① aim the spider line of cursor at the center of character block B , press key„0‟
② aim the spider line of cursor at the center of character block 0 , press key„0‟
③ aim the spider line of cursor at the center of character block 3 , press „0‟
④ aim the spider line of cursor at the center of character block E , press key„0‟
The digitizer works according to the requirement of setting of 0 , 3 after the above
operations are finished. And this setting will be saved automatically. You needn't
do setting again with the same applications even if restart the digitizer.
Annotate: ① if you choose the wrong numeral block, but not choose E , you can
operate from B once again and choose two correct numeral block successively,
then choose E to finish. ② if choose more than two numeral block then only the
first two numeral blocks are in effect, in this case you can restart from B and then
choose numeral blocks E to the end.③ you can choose numeral icons B, E
continuously to save parameter of digitizer which is setup by using Richpeace
order or Digitizer order.

Controlling sound
① When you use the order: TN<CR>, a short tone is will sound when Digitizer received
an order or any cursor key is pressed.
② When you use the order: TF<CR>, whether Digitizer received an order or any cursor
key is pressed, the alarm will not sound in response to that.
Selecting base point location
Richpeace Digitizer has four base point locations of coordinate; they are located in lower
left, upper left, upper right, lower right of the active area.

① Set the base point at the lower left corner.

Order: LD<CR>

Four Servicing The Digitizer

Cleaning digitizer panel
Because the working panel of Richpeace digitizer is white so its surface will be dirty
after a long time using, please use mild cleanser and soft clean cloth to clean it. Don not

23
24

use stiff thing lest damage the panel.

Cleaning cursor
Use soft clean cloth to dip cleanser to clean the organic glass body of cursor, but not to
damage the cross spider line and the surface of organic glass body.
You should clean the plastic cover by using non-corrosive cleanser, don‟t use much force
to clean the conductive elastomer lest erase the character on the button.

Five Instruction of digitizer testing software

RichpeaceTest is a program for testing and setting digitizer. It is applicable with WIN98 、
WIN2000
(1) Starting Richpeace Test Program
To start the RichpeaceTest is very easy and the only thing you have to do is to double click
the filename that is under the directory of this program.
(2) Using RichpeaceTest program
After starting Richpeace Test program, the upper right pane in RichpeaceTest
interface is receive data window which is used for receiving the selected COM port data;
the pane just in the lower is character input window which is used for sending the order to
the digitizer and displaying the character that is inputted from the keyboard; the upper left
is the area for selecting serial port parameter. You can select the COM port、baud rate、
parity、data bit and output format of coordinate by using mouse to click the icon ▼ .
PORT can be COM1 or COM2;
BAUDRATE can be 1200,2400,9600 or 19200;
PARITY can be none-checking NULL、odd-check or even-heck
DATABITS can be 7 or 8;
OUTPUT FORMAT OF COORDINATE can be :
●ASCII FORMAT
●BCD(binary No.23 format)
●BIN(display every byte of binary system output format of coordinate)
Turn on the power supply of digitizer, after starting the RichpeaceTest program you can
see the implicational parameter is:
PORT=COM1
BAUDRATE=9600
PARITY=NULL
DATABITS=8
FORMAT=ASCII
Use mouse to click the icon ▼ that for selecting port parameter, and select
COM1 or COM2(if the serial cable of digitizer is connected with COM2 of computer then
select COM2 in RichpeaceTest interface). If you select COM1 or COM2 correctly then you
can see continuous coordinate value in the upper right of receive data window. And it
changes with the moving of cursor. (if output format of coordinate is binary, and choose
ASCII at the „FORMAT‟ position of RichpeaceTest interface, then the receive data window
display the jumbled code )
When input the digitizer order from keyboard the order character displays at the just lower

24
25

part of the character input window. You can use Richpeace order or Digitizer order. If you
input the character wrong you needn‟t to correct it, just input the whole of the correct order
once again. When the digitizer received a correct order you could hear a tone “di….”
(3) Setting baud rate and other parameter
Baud rate、parity check and data digit must be set in a certain order, otherwise the
digitizer can not receive correct order. The principal of setting is the baud rate、parity
check and data digit of digitizer must keep the same as the those of computer then it can
send out order to change the parameter of digitizer .
e.g. the digitizer serial port works in the state of 9600 baud rate and 8-bit none-parity
check, if you want to setup it to be 9600 baud rate and 7-bit even parity check you need to
select BAUDRATE as 9600, PARITY as NULL, DATABITS as 8 in RichpeaceTest program
interface, at this time key in „7E<CR>‟ then the setting is end. If you want to save your
setting you need to select BAUDRATE as 9600, PARITY as EVEN, DATABITS as 7, at this
time key in „SV<CR>‟ then the operation of saving the setting is end. Restart then the
digitizer works according to the saved parameter.

Six Troubleshooting guide

If you have problems with your Digitizer please do as below:
① Read the user manual again to make sure the correctness of your operation.
② According to the description of this chapter to make sure is the trouble caused by
display device of computer and the applications software or is it caused by the trouble of
digitizer. And whether the trouble can be solved by yourself or not.
③ If it still has trouble please contact with us:
E-mail: [email protected] or E-mail: [email protected]
http:// www.richpeace.com
Please tell us the following information:
⑴ Describe the trouble
⑵ Name and version of the applications software and operation system form that you use.
⑶ Your computer‟s model.
⑷ The serial number of Richpeace digitizer (at the back of digitizer panel)
⑸ the catching point tools (cursor or pen)

Digitizer’s Troubleshooting guide:

① Whether the power supply adapter is correct, and voltage is 220V±10% ,and the
special switch is turn on or not.
② Whether the fuse of 3-bin power socket on main control box has blown.
③ Is there any sound when you start the digitizer, and whether the green indicator lights
lightened.
④ Whether the red indicator lights lightened when the cursor in the active area, and
whether the red light is off when the cursor is leveled up or moved out of the active area.
⑤ Whether the cursor is connected in incorrect port

25
26

⑥ Whether the serial port cable is connected with the serial port of computer.
⑦ Whether after entering in main menu of digitizer and press B but don‟t press
E to return.
⑧ checking: serial port cable、cursor cable、cursor、connector , and make sure they are
in good condition.
⑨ press reset key and turn on the power, then release reset key till the sound of buzzer
is end. Start RichpeaceTest program and adjust serial port parameter then observe is
there any data or jumbled code in the window.

Computer’s Troubleshooting guide:

① Make sure that the power is on and the adapter is in good connective condition.
② Whether the applications software is suitable with the computer‟s service platform.
③ Whether the applications software is installed correctly.
④ Whether the serial port is working well. Or change another serial port or another
computer to try again.

Software Troubleshooting guide:

If digitizer can operate with some software then it shows digitizer、serial port、computer
is good.
① even if the software supports the same model digitizer, it dose not mean the same
configure parameter can be used. Although the output format may be same, the
communication parameter、resolving rate、working mode and output speed rate may not
be same. Please setup the above parameters according to the requirement of software.
② maybe there are some problems in the software package of your operation system,
please contact with the supplier. If the software worked well before, please do as the
following step:
(1) whether the serial cable is connected with the correct serial port of computer,
if it is then restart the digitizer and the software.
(2) Whether you press the reset key or the power supply is interrupted during the
computer is working. If it is so, the computer sends some disordered code to
serial port and cause the digitizer cannot send out data. In this case you need
to restart the computer.
(3) Whether you installed new software or hard ware in your computer, if so,
remove them and then check if the trouble exists.
(4) Whether the software that you installed changed AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
(5) Whether upgrade the software and drivers.
(6) Whether installed another mouse driver.
(7) Reinstall applications software .

Special troubleshooting guide:

1. Digitizer’s alarm sounds continuously
(1) Shut down the digitizer, and wait for about 30 seconds then turn on the power switch
again.
