3rd TERM 1º BACH

The document discusses understanding dreams and different approaches to interpreting them. Some websites provide universal dream dictionaries with symbolic meanings of common dream themes. However, others believe dream symbols are unique to each individual and it is better to analyze recurrent themes in one's own dreams over time using dream logging apps. These apps may help users gain greater insight from patterns in their dreams and unconscious minds. Recording dreams over weeks or months with feedback from psychologists can reveal similarities between dreams initially seen as different.

Understanding Our Dreams

I Many of us are fascinated by our dreams and believe that our sleep-time adventures have
significance. In recent years, our curiosity about our dreams has led to many new websites and
apps that promise to help us to make sense of the messages in the dreams.
II These websites include online dream dictionaries like DreamMoods and Dream Key, which
provide users with a list of “universal” dream symbols to explain the symbolic significance of
common themes that occur in dreams. According to these dictionaries, for example, a person
who loses his teeth in a dream actually has got a fear of death.
III Yet, many people believe that it is not possible to give universal meanings to symbols that
appear in dreams and that symbols are in fact unique to each person. In their view, if we really
want to get to the bottom of what is bothering us, it is necessary to analyse our dreams over
time in order to find recurrent themes. And that is where apps like DreamProfessor, and
DreamsCloud come in. Users of the apps are asked to keep a dream log over a period of a few
weeks or months. In return, they are given feedback from a panel of expert psychologists based
on the information they have recorded. Users often find that although their dreams initially
appear to be totally different, there are in fact similarities between them. As a result, users gain
greater insight into what their unconscious is telling them.
IV These apps may also have an added benefit. Researchers claim that if they are given permission
to use the material that has been uploaded by users, they will then have a large database of
information.
V Yet, it is important to remember that, as long as dream analysis is conducted by individuals, it
can never be completely objective. Analysts have their own set of experiences and prejudices
that will inevitably influence any interpretation they make. As a result, it is unlikely that we
will ever be able to comprehend the full significance of what we dream.

It’s All in a Name

I In April 2013, a detective novel called The Cuckoo’s Calling was released. It was published as
a debut novel by Robert Galbraith, a former military policeman and an unknown first-time
author. The novel was apparently based on Galbraith’s own experiences and those of his
military friends. The detective novel received positive reviews from the critics, yet initially
only 1,500 copies were sold.
II A few months after the book was released, a journalist at The Sunday Times received an
anonymous message on Twitter. It claimed that The Cuckoo’s Calling was not written by
Robert Galbraith and that in fact no such person existed. Instead, the source suggested, it had
been written by none other than J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series. Although the
journalist was initially sceptical of the anonymous tip, he and his editor, Richard Brooks, began
to look into the possibility that Robert Galbraith was indeed a pseudonym for Rowling.
III When they began looking more closely at the detective novel, they noticed that it did indeed
have things in common with Rowling’s other work. For example, it used a lot of Latin and was
highly critical of the middle classes, a common theme in Rowling’s books. They also noted that
Galbraith had the same publisher and editor as the famous author.
IV Brooks decided to confront Rowling’s publisher. To his surprise, his suspicions were
confirmed. Rowling had indeed written the novel under a different name. She had wanted to
publish anonymously so that she would be able to receive genuine feedback from critics and
readers without their responses being influenced by her famous name. Once the real identity of
the author of The Cuckoo’s Calling was revealed, the book jumped to the top of the bestseller
lists and became a huge success.
V We can understand Rowling’s desire to avoid all the hype and publicity surrounding the
publication of a novel with her name on its cover. However, do readers have the right to know
whose books they are reading?

Teeth Meet Technology

I For mobile phone owners, recharging batteries is a way of life. But how about recharging your teeth? When a new
invention developed in Taiwan goes on sale, this may become a daily habit.
II Computer scientist Hao-hua Chu was unhappy at how frequently his 11-year-old daughter needed to visit the dentist, and
this made him think about whether digital technology could improve dental care as well as general health. His solution?
A smart tooth that records how, and how often, a person eats, drinks, coughs and smokes.
III So far, trials have been conducted on eight volunteers. Each person chewed gum, drank water, coughed and read out
loud. They spent about 30-40 seconds on each activity while sensors attached to their teeth transmitted information to a
computer along thin wires. After adjusting the program to fit individual patterns – for example, some people chew more
quickly than others, or read more slowly – the computer was able to detect with 94-98% accuracy what the person was
actually doing. This is because our jaws move slightly differently for each activity.
IV Eventually, scientists hope to create a sensor that will fit inside a false tooth, or even into a cavity in an existing tooth.
The information collected would be transmitted wirelessly, using a device similar to a Bluetooth mobile phone
transmitter, a smartphone or computer. They hope to give the device enough power so that it would only need be
removed for recharging once a day.
V Not only dentists but doctors too are excited about the smart tooth. They believe that determining how often people eat,
and maybe what they are eating, would help dieters, diabetics and others. The technology could also tell how often
people smoke and how often they talk, which is an indication of how much they interact with others, itself a signal of
health.
VI So, it’s not silly to imagine that in the near future, doctors will use our teeth to help diagnose health problems, as well as
to make recommendations for a healthier lifestyle.
