A Voyage to Lilliput

II. Answer the following questions:


1. Which place did Gulliver belong to?
A. Gulliver belonged to Nottinghamshire, England.
2. Where were Gulliver and the crewmen struck by a violent storm? What did it
result into?
A. Gulliver and the crewmen were struck near the coast of Sumatra by a
violent storm. They were driven through the seas for days, twelve of the
crewmen had died and many had become weak. The ship then struck a
rock and split into two, six of the crew including Gulliver got into a boat
and were able to escape. They managed to row for three miles, when a
giant wave swept all of them and Gulliver was the only one who
managed to swim to the shore.
3. What did Gulliver find after he woke up in the morning?
A. When Gulliver woke up in the morning he tried to get up but could not
move. His arms, legs and hairs were tied tightly to the ground with
strings. He couldn’t even turn his head but could only look at the sun,
which was growing hotter and he could hear noises.
4. Give the physical description of a Lilliputian?
A. A Lilliputian was a tiny creature less than six inches high.
5. Why was the stage constructed and where?
A. A stage of about one and half feet high was built near by Gulliver for the
leader of the Liiliput’s to climb on it and communicate with Gulliver.
6. How was Gulliver fed when hungry?
A. Several ladders were applied to the sides of Gulliver’s body and about a
hundred inhabitants climbed up and walked towards his mouth with
hundreds of baskets laden with meat and vegetables. Gulliver ate two or
three baskets of mutton legs at a time and three loaves of bread, the
size of a marble, all together. They also fed him with barrels of water
which were hardly more than half a pint.
7. How was Gulliver relieved of the pain?
A. The Lilliputians applied some balm or ointment in all the places where
arrows had hit Gulliver. In a few minutes Gulliver was relieved of the
pain.

II. Summary

While on his way to school or even at home, the child meets a hawker,
gardener and a watchman. In this poem the child speaks of them. The hawker
sells the bangles, the gardener digs the soil, and the watchman keeps watch at
night. He feels envious of them because they all seem free while he is not.

Every day on his way to school, he sees a hawker selling bangles. He seems to
choose any road he likes. He has no fixed time even of returning home. The
child wishes that he were a hawker! From the gate of his house, he sees the
gardener digging the ground and soiling his clothes. No one asks him not to
dig ground or not to soil his clothes. He is so free that the child aspires to be a
gardener.

At night, through the open window of his room, he sees the watchman
moving up and down the lane. No one tells the watchman that it is night, and
he must go to bed. The child wishes to be a watchman.
