THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This paper presents an overview of the research. It contains the introduction, statement of the

problem, scope and delimitation, significance of the study and definition of terms

Introduction

Culture is a constantly changing aspect. Culture always undergoes change during a

developmental phase. For instance, 18th century culture differs from 20th century culture. There

are many factors that contribute to cultural shift, and interaction with other cultures is among

them. Individuals are profoundly influenced by technological advances in their choice to adopt a

particular culture. Some argue that technology is one of the main elements that propel cultural

transition, notably in the present day, when technology's rapid advancement causes culture to shift

quickly. This proves that the development of technology has modified our way of life. Culture

describes a group of people's shared traits, which include things like place of origin, religion,

language, food, social norms, art, literature, and music. Many people identify with certain cultures

because they are widespread and because they share their origins' values, beliefs, and ways of life.

Others are rather small, and there aren't many people that identify with that culture. But the worth

of a culture cannot be determined by its size. Every culture has something to teach us about

ourselves, others, and the larger world, regardless of how popular or preserved it is, how ancient it

is, or whether it has changed over time or remained the same.

A culture is a way of life that is unique to a set of people in our society. It is the outcome of

human thought that contributes actively in one’s lifestyle. Every individual development has the
DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC
opportunity to encounter new cultures and adopt various traditions. Although the majority of our

fundamental cultural nuances are learned early on from our families, education, and others, we

individuals are always learning about different cultures, both knowingly and unknowingly.

(National Center for Cultural Competence, n.d.)

Lifestyle is defined as the person's or a group's way of life. There are several lifestyles for

people. Interests, desires, needs, intentions, and perceptions are all part of it. Hasa (2021) claims

that the primary distinction between culture and lifestyle is that the culture always pertains to a

society or group of people, whilst the lifestyle corresponds to a person's way of living. Lifestyle can

be thought of as a part of culture. Moreover, a person's culture will always have an impact on his

lifestyle.

Korean wave is a term that refers to a general explosion of popularity in Korean fares

socially. Korean Wave is still present in Korean television and films. Combined with a fusion of

Korean popular music, dance, clothing, food, Korean language, traditions, and cosmetics items.

Definitely, the Korean wave has created a tremendously powerful global fashion influence.

Hallyu, also known as the Korean wave, is a term used to describe how South Korean

culture and products, including music, television shows, and cuisine, have spread throughout Asia

and other parts of the world since the mid-late 1990s. Hallyu has gained popularity across the

globe. Hallyu, also known as the "k-wave," was first introduced to the Philippines in the early 2000s

through Korean dramas, or "Koreanovelas," according to a research published in the International

Journal of Social Science and Humanity (Amar, 2022).

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC
Korean pop culture, or Hallyu, is extremely popular right now. Oscar-winning movies like

Parasite and TV shows like Netflix's Squid Game, as well as K-Pop artists like BTS and BlackPink,

are sweeping the world of entertainment, from the US to Philippines and Thailand to the United

Kingdom. Hallyu has profited greatly from the globalization of Social media, where K-pop fandoms

have developed on platforms such as Twitter and TikTok.

Punongbayan & Araullo (2023) asserts that Korean culture has a substantial impact on the

food, fashion, cosmetics, music, and entertainment industries and interests of individuals. This

shows that the foreign culture has the ability to enter the Philippines at any time and drastically

change everything from a particular behavior, lifestyle, and way of life—just as Korean culture has

done.

The majority of Korean fans learn about the Korean wave, or Hallyu, by watching Korean

dramas, fangirling over their favorite groups, and engaging with Korean culture through food,

fashion, and other experiences. Korea is a major influencer, particularly their K-pop stars and

groups. In the Philippines, most of the Filipinos are impressed by how gorgeous Korean’s historical

places are, how the Korean music is wonderful to their ears, and how they introduced their foods

and fashion in the Philippines. Even Filipinos cannot deny that most Korean actors are gorgeous

and good-looking, particularly in the eyes of youths, and that Koreans are a major impact on

fashion and how well people dress (Maniego et al.).

The popularity of learning Korean language is rising. Currently, 51 million people live in

Korea, yet over 74 million speak the language. This is due to the global sweeping influence of

Korean popular culture. Korean culture is widespread and can be found in K-Pop and Korean

dramas.
DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC
As they grew to adore Korean dramas and music, the majority of Kpop fans in the Philippines were

inspired by Korean idols to buy meals and items that they already buy or that they consider to be

their favorites. It shows how devoted or fanatical a Filipino may be about Korean idols that they will

buy and consume anything because their idols eat it. As the world developed throughout the years

and is still doing so today, Korean culture's influence on Filipinos grew.

The Teenagers, including Filipino youth, are those most impacted by the Korean Wave.

Everywhere you go, including at schools, shopping centers, stores, when riding a jeepney, and

even in leisure settings like parks, you may notice the affects of the Korean Wave in the Filipino,

particularly to the Filipino Youth. Now, Filipino youngsters' ears and eyes have been hypnotized by

Korean pop culture. Young people are now so into K-Pop because of the fascinating faces of the K-

Pop idols and their entertaining makeup tutorials, as well as their unique style. K-Pop music is also

easily heard and suitable with the tastes of the wider population, making it popular among young

people in general.

The Korean Wave has expanded far across the country. Over the past few years, there have

been more concerts and fan events featuring Korean artists. Additionally, Korean make-up brands

and stores, Korean restaurants, Korean language classes, and travel deals to South Korea are all

becoming more common in Philippines. Pop culture and entertainment are exported most widely

from South Korea. The world has become captivated with almost everything South Korea has to

offer, from food to innovation, music to movies. People, especially younger people, have a special

fondness in their hearts for Korean culture. This is evident by the numerous products of Korean

culture, including dramas, films, songs, clothing, and other industries. People are drawn to and

involved in Korean culture because of the TV dramas and intensely compelling pop music. K-Pop
DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC
music is also commonly recognized and compatible with the interests of the general public, making

it popular among youngsters as a whole. (Ilvi Nur, 2016)

The presence of exposure with another culture is one of several factors that contribute to

culture transition. Korean culture took the world by storm. Philippine culture has been infected by

and strongly interwoven with Korean patterns as witnessed in Korean dramas. Diverse cultural

influences constantly have an impact on lifestyle. In this instance, the researchers will study how

Korean culture affects students' lifestyles. Researchers are interested in learning how Korean

culture has influenced Filipinos, particularly students at Dominican College of Tarlac, in terms of

lifestyle.
