2020ME10902 MCL311 Lab5 PDF

1. The document describes a finite element analysis of a 2D rectangular geometry using both 4-node quadrilateral and 8-node quadrilateral elements. 2. For the analysis using 4-node elements, the maximum von Mises stress was 2.86 GPa and for the 8-node elements the maximum was 3.61 GPa. 3. The 8-node element model provided a more accurate solution as expected for a higher order element.

Q1:
1.Go to preferences -> structural then ok.
2. First go to preprocessor -> element type -> add/edit/delete and then what is element that
is solid in our question and then choose quad 4 node 182 and then ok.
3. Go to the preprocessor -> Material properties -> Material models and choose the
isotropic material and put value of young modulus 73.1e3 MPa and poisson ratio is 0.33 and
then ok.
4.Here we form first rectangle first go to Preprocessor -> Modeling -> Create -> Areas ->
Rectangle -> By 2 Corners and take initial value of x and y as 0 and take width as 150 mm
and height as 100mm and then ok.
5. Here is the rectangle formed.
6.Here we make circles at the two edges of 5 mm radii, First go to Preprocessor -> Modeling
-> Create -> Areas -> Circle -> Solid Circle, first circle at (75,0) and another at (75,150) and
then ok.
7.Now here we remove the circles, first go to the Preprocessor -> Modeling -> Operate ->
Booleans -> Subtract -> Areas and select the areas and remove those circles.
8.Here we need to specify the element size of each element that is to be generated from
automeshing, First go to Preprocessor -> Meshing -> Size Cntrls -> Manual size -> Areas -> All
areas and there we need to fill 1 mm as the element edge length.
9.It assigns all the meshed elements same material property that we defined earlier based
on young modulus and poisson ratio, First we go to Preprocessor -> Modeling ->
Move/Modify -> Elements -> Modify Attrib and then we need to click on all pick and then
select material to change as “Material – MAT and new attribute no. to 1 and press ok.
10. Here we defined the pressure on geometry, Then go to Preprocessor -> Loads -> Define
Loads -> Apply -> Structural -> Pressure -> On Lines and then select the sides of rectangle
where we load the pressure and then we enter the value of pressure and take “-1” as this
force is tensile force and then ok.
11. Here we restrict the displacement of one side of rectangle along x-axis and restrict the
displacement of one point, first go to Preprocessor -> Loads -> Define loads -> Apply ->
Structural -> Displacement -> On Lines and then select DOF to be constrained to UX and
then restrict both UX and UY and then ok.
12.Then we need to go to the Solution -> Solve -> Current LS and then ok.
13. Then go to General postproc -> Plot Results -> Contour Plot -> Nodal Solution and then
we select von Mises stress and then ok.
14. Here is the plot for von misses stress.
15. Here we plot stress along x-axis component, then we go General Postproc -> Plot results
-> Contour Plot -> Nodal Solu and then select X-component of stress and then ok.
16. Here we plot for XY Shear stress, Then we go to General Postproc -> Plot results ->
Contour Plot -> Nodal Solution and then select XY shear stress and then ok.
Q2:
For this we need to change only one step, at start when we select Add/Edit/Delete option
then we have to define our element here using “ADD” option and selecting structural mass -
> Solid and select 8 node 183 type and then ok.
And then all process is same
1.Here is the plot for von misses stress for 2 nd.
2.Here is the X-component of stress of 2nd.
3.Here is plot of XY Shear stress for 2 nd.
