For more detailed information about the drawings and the parameters submitted for this review, please refer to the
appendix attached.
Ref 1 The structural glazing details have been reviewed and the design structural bite of 16 mm (proposed bite)
and glueline thickness of 6 mm (proposed thickness) meet our minimum required bite size of 8 mm (min
required bite). Therefore we approve the use of DOWSILᵀᴹ 795 Structural Glazing Sealant structural
sealant for this application.
Ref 2 The weatherseal details for the project listed have been reviewed. The design width of 6 mm and depth
of 6 mm, as proposed, are approved for use in this project.
Dow’s Print and Specification Review is undertaken for the sole purpose of determining whether the joint designs
chosen for the Project are compatible with the design strength or movement capabilities and design strength of
the Product. Dow assumes no responsibility for the suitability or adequacy of the specified materials or for any
structural design elements in the prints and specifications for the Project, and Dow expressly disclaims any
warranty or responsibility whatsoever for such materials or structural design elements.
The supplier of each structurally glazed substrate and spacer must be contacted to approve the use of its material
in structural applications. Only substrates which have a protected surface (like eg anodized alumium) or for which
the substrate has corrosion resistant properties (like eg stainless steel) can be used for structural glazing. Dow
verifies only the adhesive characteristics and compatibility of the silicone sealant to those materials through
laboratory testing.
Glass panels that are structurally glazed in factory can only be transported and installed on the building after the
structural sealant has fully cured and adhered. The time to develop full adhesion is dependent on temperature,
humidity and the substrates. It must be verified before transportation that the full adhesion of the sealant to the
substrates have occurred. Please refer to our technical manuals that can be find on
http://www.dow.com/construction for more information.
Glass panels that are structurally glazed on site must be secured mechanically till the structural sealant is fully
cured and adhered.
The Dow 1-component sealants require contact with air to cure. In deep joints the rate of cure slows and the full
cure may never fully occur. In joint which are more than 15mm/ 0.75 inch deep, either open cell spacers should
be used, or the application should be done in multiple steps to allow a full cure.

To ensure sufficient adhesion, a minimum of ¼ inch/6mm of contact should exist between the sealant and each
of the substrates to which adhesion is required.
In all cases, you must design your joint so the movement capabilities of the DOWSILᵀᴹ brand silicone sealants
are not exceeded and so that the sealant can be properly applied in the joint configurations. Refer to
www.astm.org for C1193-00 Standard Guide for Use of Joint Sealants; and C1472-00 Standard Guide for
Calculating Movement
Dow will test substrates for weathersealing applications if requested. However, you may wish to consult the Dow
Construction Technical Manuals and perform a Standard Field Adhesion Test to determine adhesion
characteristics under actual conditions. Please keep documentation as to joint locations, installation test dates,
and sealant and primer lot numbers used in case a future review is necessary.
In addition to a Dow approved print review, Dow must also test and approve all substrates and accessory materials
that contact the Dow structural silicone sealants in order to receive a structural warranty from Dow.
Recommendations will be based on this review and results of our laboratory testing.
The above mentioned joint dimension requirements do not take into account tolerances (i.e. cutting, fixing, etc.).
These must be taken into account to ensure the minimum requirement is achieved in practice.
All silicone sealants require contact with the air to fully cure.
Dow supports the use of our sealants in the above referenced projects based on details received and when used
in accordance with the recommendations in this letter, in the laboratory testing letter and in the procedures
summarized in the Dow Construction Technical Manuals located under http://www.dow.com/construction.
Upon completion of this review, Dow supports the use of our sealant in joints shown in the above referenced
drawings when used in accordance with the comments in this letter and Dow's published literature. If you have
any questions or comments regarding this review, please contact undersigned.
Sincerely,
