Interpersonal Communication:
We can communicate with each
other efficiently and easily.
Example: emails, chat rooms, video
conferencing etc., all of these are possible
because of computer networks.

Resources can be shared:
We can share physical resources by
making them available on a network
such as printers, scanners etc.

Sharing files, data: Authorized users are
allowed to share the files on the
network.
Types of Networks
A network may be classified based on its
coverage and availability. The most common
classifications are as follows:
Local Area Network (LAN) – a network limited to
a room or building.
Types of Networks
Campus Area Network (CAN) – a network composed of
two or more connected LANs but is limited to a school
campus or other similar setup.
Types of Networks
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) – a network
composed of two or more LANs or CANs but is
limited within a town, city, or metropolitan.
Types of Networks
Wide Area Network (WAN) – a network covering a wide
geographical area that is beyond the metropolitan,
regional, or national coverage. Such networks use routers
and public communication links.

Internetwork – a network composed of two
or more networks using devices such as a
switch or router. Basically, any network
connected together by a switch or router is
called an internetwork.

Intranet – an internetwork limited to the use of a
single organization

Extranet – a network or intranetwork limited to the


use of a single organization but with some of its
resources exposed to outside networks
