Executive summary

Mobile jammer devices are becoming civilian products rather than electronic warfare devices.
Due to the increasing number of mobile phone users, the need to disable mobile phones in
specific places where the ringing of cell phone and using internet would be illegal is increasing.
Then we motivated to do this project for these places including Exam halls, churches, university
lecture rooms, libraries, meeting rooms, and other places where silence is appreciated.

This project is to design and implementation a cellular and WIFI jammer, it is a device that
transmit signal on the same frequency at which the cellular GSM and WIFI system downlink
operates. The jamming success when the mobile GSM and WIFI in the area where the jammer is
located are disabled.

This project is mainly intended to prevent the usage of mobile phones in places like exam halls
inside its coverage without interfering with the communication channels outside its range. This
project provides a cheap and reliable method for blocking mobile network and WIFI
communication in the required restricted areas only.

The circuits that use for GSM and WIFI jammer are Tuning Circuit, Voltage Controlled
Oscillator, RF Amplifier and Antenna form the Jammer circuit. All the circuit output are
constructed and observed using the PROTUES software and using MATLAB.

This project is able to block communication coming into and going out from a GSM phone
operating on the 935MHz to 960MHz frequency band and WIFI which operates on the 2.4GHz
to 2.5 GHz frequency band, in the distance of 20 meter.

With the help of MATLAB platform we found the minimum SNR for the GSM network to fully
function as 12 dB. And we also investigated the minimum Jamming power needed to disable the
network as 5 dB less than the received signal power.

Introduction

A cellular GSM and WIFI Jammer is a device that transmit signal on the same frequency at
which the GSM and WIFI system operates, the jamming success when the mobile phones in the
area where the jammer is Located are disabled. Communication jamming devices were first
developed and used by military. Where tactical commanders use RF communications to exercise
control of their forces, an enemy has interest in those communications. This interest comes from
the fundamental area of denying the Successful transport of the information from the sender to
the receiver.

Nowadays the mobile jammer devices are becoming civilian products rather than electronic
warfare devices, since with the increasing number of the mobile phone users the need to disable
mobile phones in specific places where the ringing of cell phone would be disruptive has
increased. These places include worship places, university lecture rooms, libraries, concert halls,
meeting rooms, exam halls and other places where silence is appreciated.

As with other radio jamming, cell phone jammers block cell phone use by sending out radio
waves along the same frequencies that cellular phones operate on. This causes enough
interference with the communication between cell phones and BTS to make the phones unusable.

Most cell phones use different bands to send and receive communications from BTS. Jammers
can work by either disrupting phone to BTS frequencies or BTS to phone frequencies.

Literature Review

The rapid production of mobile phones at the beginning of the 21st century to nearly status
eventually raised problems, such as their potential use to invade privacy or contribute to
academic cheating. In classical time initial measures taken against this mobile phones disruption
includes Faraday cages, which was invented in 1836 by Michael Faraday. They were originally
developed for law enforcement and the military to interrupt communications by criminals and
terrorists. The drawbacks with the Faraday cages are that they are expensive, and require manual
operator. After Faraday cages, different mobile systems are introduced as Mobile Telephone
Service. GSM mobile phone jammer devices were an alternative to more expensive Faraday
cages. The project, Dual Band Mobile Jammer for GSM 900 & GSM 1800, 2008 done by
Ahmed Sudqi, Hussein Abdul, Rahman Ahmad and Nasr Raja focuses on design and
implementation of dual-band cell-phone jammer. The project, Mobile signal jammer using
Arduino in April 2013 is done by Raja Gopal MD focuses on block mobile phone use by sending
out radio waves along the same frequencies that mobile phones use. The project Cellular Signals
Jamming System in 2G And 3G, April 2014 by Shantanu Krishna Mahato, C.Vimala states and
discusses the design and development of GSM Mobile jammer and aims to present a solution for
the problems that occur through the cell phone. Later on 2015-2016 the project done by Aryan
Kumar , signal jamming, this project focuses on jamming device broadcasts an RF signal in the
frequency range reserved for cell phones that interferes with the cell phone signal, which results
in a “no network available” display on the cell phone screen and it is applicable only on GSM
900. Above papers done on mobile jamming, they have their own weakness and strengths. The
main weaknesses which are done by above papers were their working bandwidth or their range
of coverage. The second is most projects were done by Arduino; unable to give time and
frequency analysis and the other drawback in the previous paper is the jamming technique they
used. Some papers use “spoofing technique”, the device forces the mobile to turn off itself,
which is very difficult to be implemented. Some papers use “shielding attach”, closing an area
in a device so inside this area cannot transmit or receive RF signal from outside. Our project will
solve the band width to 20m by designing the circuit, we use Proteus and Mat lab to give

frequency and time analysis and we will use “denial of service” jamming technique that
transmits a noise signal at the same operating frequency of the mobile phone.
