21st CENTURY LITERATURE FROM PHILIPINES AND THE WORLD

LESSON 14: ASIAN LITERATURE


Asian Literature - encompasses the rich and widely diverse cultural and ethnic heritages found in such
countries as China, Japan, Vietnam, Korea, India and more.
Chinese Literature - China is the world’s most populous country. China has been the dominant culture of
East Asia since ancient times.
The Five Classics:
• The Book of Changes
• The Book of History
• The Book of Rites
• The Book of Odes
• The Spring and Autumn Annals
History of Chinese Literature - Chinese civilization is the oldest civilizations in the world that dates back
to the Shang Dynasty in 1765 B.C. It is known as “The Red Dragon. Chinese literature is one of the major
literary heritages of the world, with an uninterrupted history of more than 3,000 years, dating back at
least to the 14th century.
Genre: Novel Historical Fiction, Fantasy Fiction, Historical Fiction, Family Saga
The Four Great Classical Novels:
• Water Margin by Shi Nai’an
• Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en
• Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guannzhong
• Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin
Japanese Literature - The “Land of the rising sun”. Japan has an ancient culture and traditions, The first
writing of literature in Japanese was occasioned by influence from China.
The earliest writings from Ancient Japan are:
• The record of ancient matters in Kojiko (712)
• The chronicles of Japan or Nihongi (720)
Japanese Drama
• Noh play
• Joruri or pupper play
• Kabuki play
Japanese Poetry
Manyo Shu - Collection of myriad leaves the oldest collection of poetry. It was compiled in 800. The
collection titled One Hundred Persons was compiled much later.
History of Japanese Literature - Early works of Japanese literature were heavily influenced by cultural
contact with China and Chinese literature.
Genre: Novel Fiction, Biography Nonfiction, Poetry
• The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu
• The Pillow book by Sei Shōnagon
• The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Matsuo Basho.
Korean Literature - The English name Korea derives from “Goryeo”, The name “Goryeo” is derived from
“Gorguryeo” one of the ancient Three Kingdoms of Korea, which changed its name to Goryeo during
reign of King Jangsu of Goguryeo. Early Korean literature was heavily influenced by Shamanism,
Buddhism and Confucianism,The body of works written by Koreans, at first in Classical Chinese.

Classical Works:

• Hyangga - Korean writings were poems called hyangga The hyangga, also known
as saenaennorae, were written in idu.
History of Korean Literature - The origins of Korean literature can be traced back to an Old Stone
Age art form that combined dance, music, and literature.
Genre: Poetry Nonfiction

• Hyangga by Silla people under Silla dynasty during 668 B.C


Vietnamese Literature - was developed at an early date. Despite the harsh trials of history in the form of
repeated foreign invasion. Its own characteristics remain.

Folk Literature - The folk literature always praised beauty, humanism and the love of goodness, and
contributed to the formation of a national sense.
Written Literature - First appeared around the 10th century. It had a leading role and bore the main
traits of Vietnamese Literature`
History of Vietnamese Literature - Chinese influence on the written literature of Vietnam is nearly as old
as its conquest of the country in the 2nd century BC.
Genre: Epic Poetry, Poetry, Novel Historical fiction
• The Tale of Kieu by Nguyen Du
• Lament of the Soldier's Wife by Dang Tran Con
• The Sorrow of War: A Novel of North Vietnam by Bao Ninh

Philippine Literature - Philippine Literature withstood time and periods and has evolved through
generations. For every period that passed, different genres appeared, and these literary works rooted
from all regions reflecting their culture, society and lifestyle.
History of Philippine Literature - Philippine literature is literature associated with the Philippines from
prehistory, through its colonial legacies, and on to the present.
Genre: Novel Fiction, Satire, Fiction Epic poetry, Short story fiction.

Indian Literature - It is known as “Land of prayer” India is the vast land in southern asia, extending from
the Himalayan mountains south to the tip of a great peninsula that reaches from out into the Indian
Ocean. Writings of the Indian subcontinent, produced there in a variety of vernacular languages,
History of Indian Literature - Dravians earliest people in India dating back to 3000 BC
The earliest Indian literature took the form of the canonical Hindu sacred writings, known as the Veda,
which were written in Sanskrit. Sanskirt literature of India. The word “sanskrit” means cultivated or
perfected.
Vedas – the bible of the Indians.
Genre: Religious text, Fiction Epic Poetry, Poetry, Play, Fables, Poetry

• Vedas- Vyasa compiler of vedas


• Ramayana- Valmiki
• Mahabharata- Krishna-Dwaipayan Vyasa
• Shakantula- Kalidasa
• Panchantantra- Vishnu Sharma
• Gitanjali by Rabindranath Tagore
