The document describes a mixing system with two tanks connected by pipes. Tank 1 initially contains 200L of water and 0.04kg of salt. Fresh water enters Tank 1 at 4L/hour, while 4L/hour flows from Tank 2 to Tank 1. 8L/hour flows from Tank 1 to Tank 2. Tank 2 drains 4L/hour and initially contains 200L of fresh water. The differential equations and initial conditions describing the salt levels x(t) in Tank 1 and y(t) in Tank 2 over time t are developed. The Laplace transform of the equation for x(t) is found to be (50sX(s) + 2X(s)) = Y(s

KKKQ2123 ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS III (DIFFERENTIAL EQUATION)

Question D

Consider a mixing system consists of two tanks. Tank 1 is filled with 200 litres of water initially
containing 0.04 kg of salt dissolved in it and Tank 2 contains 200 litres of fresh water. Fresh water
enters Tank 1 at a rate of 4 litres/hour. Through a connecting pipe water flows from Tank 2 into
Tank 1 at a rate of 4 litres/hour. Through a different connecting pipe 8 litres/hour of water flows
out of Tank 1 into Tank 2. Tank 2 contains one outlet where the solution is drained at the rate of 4
litres/hour.

(a) Draw a diagram that describes the mixing process.

(b) Let x(t) and y(t) represent the amount of salt (in kg) in Tank 1 and Tank 2, respectively,
at time t. Write down the differential equations and initial conditions that model the
mixing process.
(c) Use Laplace transform to find the equation indicating the amount of salt in Tank 1 at
time t.
(d) Find the amount of salt in Tank 1 after 10 hours.
