Before we start let’s have a drill
(integers) 2+7=9
-5 + 8 = 3
9–2=7
-7 – (-7) = 0
(-2) (-5) = 10
(5) (-3) = - 15
81 / 9 = 9
21 / -7 = -3
A. Recall (Elicit) 5 min
Let’s have a recall.
Is polynomial an algebraic Yes, Sir
expression?
3x + 2 is this an algebraic
expression? Yes, sir
How about 5x + 2y – 6? Yes, sir!
So how do we define algebraic
expression?
combination of variables and
constant along with the
operation. Expression made
up of terms.
In the relativity of our lesson

C. Discussion of Concepts Class, what did you observe
10 min (Explore) on the given example?
In picture number 4, what do
you think their differences?
expression doesn’t have equal
while equation has equal
sign.
So, therefore how do we
define equation, based on
your observation?
Any idea?

Equation is a mathematical
statement indicating that the
two expressions are “EQUAL”
How about on picture 5?
Inequality is not equal to
each other while equation has
equal to each other.
So, therefore how do we
define inequality, based on
your observation?
Inequality is a mathematical
statement indicating that two
expressions are NOT EQUAL.
Since we already done with
algebraic expression, like
polynomials, let’s proceed
D. Developing Mastery now on Equations.
(Explain) 10 min
What are the Properties of
Equality.
Let a, b and c are real
number.
1. Reflexive Property
a=a
Any number or expression is
equal to itself. Just like
looking at the mirror.
Example
1. 5 = 5

2. -3x = -3x
2. Symmetric Property
If a = b then b = a
The number or expression
can be interchange
The first number is equal to
the 2nd number and the 2nd
number is equal to the 1st
number.
Example.
3. if x = 5 then 5 = x
4. if -3y = 6 then 6 = -3y
3.Transitive Property
If a = b and b = c then a = c
The 1st number is equal to the
2nd number, the 2nd number
is equal to the 3rd number
then the 1st number is equal
to the 3rd number.
example
5. If 3 + 2 = 5 and 5 = 4 + 1,
then 3+2 = 4 + 1
6. if x + 4 = y – 7 and y – 7 =9
then x + 4 = 9.
4. Addition Property of
Equality
For any real number x, y and
z
If x + z = y + z
If the same number is added
to both side of an equation,
will the resulting sentence be
still an equation?
Take a look at the following
example

1. 3 + 6 = 9
Let’s try to add 4 to both
sides.
3+6+4=9+4
simplify
13 = 13
by adding both side the
equation did not change the
equality.
“Remember, you have to add
same number to each side of
an equation.
Try to solve this.
7 + 7 = 14
7 + 7 + 5 = 14 + 5 add both
side by 5 then simplify
7 + 7 + 5 = 19 and 14 + 5 =
19 so, therefore 19 = 19
Very good!
5.Subtraction Property of
Equality
For any real number x, y and
z
If x - z = y - z
If the same number is
subtracted to both side of an
equation the result will still
an equation or equal.
Let’s have an example.
6–3=3

Now let’s subtract both side
by 2.
6 – 3 – 2 = 3 -2 then simplify
6 – 3 -2 = 1 then 3 – 2 = 1
1 = 1 our answer is equal to
itself
“Remember, you have to
subtract same number to
each side of an equation.
6. Multiplication Property of
Equality.
For any real number x, y and
z
If x = y, then xz = yz.
If the same number is to be
multiplied to both sides of the
equation, will the equality
still be preserved? Let’s have
an example.
5=5
Let’s multiply both side by 5
Then simplify 5(5) = 5(5)
25 = 25
Therefore, the equality is
preserved when both sides
were multiplied by 5.
7. Division Property of
Equality.
For any real number x, y and
z
x y
if x= y , then =
z z

Let’s have an example what
will happen if we divide it
by the same number.
7x = 21
Let’s find the value of x
We are going to divide here.
Let’s divide it by 7
7 x 21
= then simplify
7 7
Since we have already the x=3
value of x
Let’s check if they are
equal to each other.
I use multiplication
because the inverse 7(3) =21
operation of division if
multiplication.
21, so therefore 21 = 21
so therefore 21 = 21
it satisfies our equations.
Since you already know
about the properties of
equalities.
what is the difference
between expression and
E. Application and equation? Expression don’t have
