Abstract. Technological developments that are so rapid nowadays make people want
to always be creative and trigger to create something new which can be applied and
can be used easily and practically and can be controlled from close and long distance.
In this research, what can be adopted is how to design a home security system using a
microcontroller-based PIR (Passive Infra Red) sensor. Where this security will work if
the PIR sensor (Passive Infra Red) detects the presence of unwanted humans into the
house, and then the microcontroller processes and instructs cellphone 1 to send alarm
signals in the form of SMS (Short Message Service).
Keywords. PIR (Passive Infra Red) Sensor, Microcontroller, Cellphone.

1. Introduction
Technological developments that are so rapid nowadays make people want to always be creative and
trigger to create something new which can be applied and can be used easily and practically(Kar,
Mohanty, & Singh, 2011). In technology, many discoveries have been very useful for humans, one of
which is a sensor, where the sensor is a device used to detect and often function to measure
magnitude(Aryza, 2016.). A sensor is a type of transducer that is used to convert mechanical,
magnetic, heat, light and chemical variations into electrical voltages and currents(Trzynadlowski,
2001). The advancement of technology is needed to create a security system, because the difficulty of
the economy at this time makes people act criminally by stealing where the theft target is the houses
left by their owners. From there that makes concern if we leave home, to overcome these problems,
this study will discuss the home security system using a microcontroller-based PIR (Passive Infra Red)
sensor. where this system is designed with an electronic device consisting of a PIR sensor, an
ATMega8535 microcontroller where this tool is used as a data storage and executionwhich has been
programmed first from here it will form a device that can generally identify human existence and can
connect with homeowners remotely(Wibowo P, 2017).

2. Literature Review
Sensors are components that convert physical quantities to electrical quantities (Yumang et al., 2017).
The sensor used in this system is the PIR sensor PIR is an infrared based sensor. However, unlike most

infrared sensors which consist of IR LEDs and phototransistors. PIR does not emitAs the name implies
"Passive", this sensor only responds to the energy from the passive infrared beam that is possessed by
every object detected by it. The object that can be detected by this sensor is usually the human
body(Jibhakate, Prof, & Huchche, 2014). According to(Solly ARyza, Muhammad Irwanto, 2016)PIR
sensors have two sensing elements that are connected to the input with the arrangement as shown in
the following Figure:

Figure 1. Line Of Frequency PIR

3. Research Metodology
PIR sensor is a sensor that is used for security sensors that will be placed in a place or point that is
usually passed by an object to easily detect the object. Therefore, in designing this sensor the PIR
sensor is installed in the room of the house which is on the path of the human entrance and exit or the
area around the entrance, this is done because it is predicted that people will go through the path to
enter the house. In addition to maximizing the security function of one area of the house.Because this
sensor works when receiving infrared rays from the human body, the sensor is placed at a height of 1.5
meters from the floor surface. So seeing from the height of a human being an average of> 1.5 meters,
it allows the sensor to detect only humans. Software design (software) in this study is needed so that
the planned system can work well. Program design in this project uses CodeVisionAVR V2.03.4
compiler software. The use of this software is a form of system optimization from all security systems
that are run. The system of this project has the main purpose of sending warning signs in the form of
SMS (Short Message Service) to homeowners.

The Flowchart explanation above is as follows:

 Start (start) Sensor checking in the room is done in real time.
 Then the PIR (Passive Infra Red) sensor detects whether there is movement or object detected, that
is human,
 If there is a human movement detected on the sensor, the microcontroller will send a command to
cellphone 1 to send an alarm in the form of sms to cellphone 2.
After the sms is sent to cellphone 2, cellphone 2 can request to send the picture of the room to
cellphone 1 via MMS (Multi Media Service).

4. Analysis And Result

The design of a home security system using a PIR sensor based on a microcontroller is designed
through the initial process, namely when the sensor is about a human object, then the sensor
automatically processes the emitted radiation to the microcontroller as a danger sign and then the
microcontroller processes the alarm to instruct the cellphone 1 send a warning sign in the form of sms
to cellphone 2. Based on the results of the data obtained during the research it can be seen the
following characteristics of the security system
Tables 1. Output Of System
Tegangan Tegangan Lama Respon
Jarak Waktu Sensor
INPUT OUTPUT Objek Pengiriman Tidak
(cm) Mendeteksi Terkirim
VDC VDC SMS Terkirim
6 Volt 100 3.26 Volt M 0.65 detik 5 detik 
6 Volt 200 3.26 Volt M 0.65 detik 5 detik 
6 Volt 300 3.26 Volt M 0.66 detik 5 detik 
6 Volt 400 3.26 Volt M 0.68 detik 5 detik 
6 Volt 500 3.26 Volt M 0.70 detik 5 detik 
*M = Human
From the table above can be made a safety system characterization, by giving an input voltage of 6
VDC, this security system is able to detect humans to the maximum effective distance of 500 Cm or ±
5 Meters. Then it takes 0.65 - 0.70 seconds to detect humans, then process and send alarms in 5
seconds.

5. Conclusions
Based on the results of the study, the following conclusions can be drawn:
1) This security system is able to provide or send a danger sign via sms within a distance of
approximately 40 KM, so that the homeowner does not need to worry about being away from
home.
2) The sensitivity of a PIR (Passive Infra Red) sensor device is high, so it is not recommended to use
the module in the following conditions:
a. In a fast changing environment
b. Strong vibration condition
c. Where there is a blocking of materials (for example glass) through IR which cannot pass
through the detected area
d. Affected by direct sunlight
e. Install and direct the wind from the heater or air conditioner to the sensor
With this security system, homeowners can get much better information because with an increasingly
advanced communication network, the homeowner can immediately find out if the house conditions
are not safe and can immediately report to the local security officers as soon as possible. The condition
of the cellular network is very influential on the work of this system, because this system uses a
communication network which in this case is a GSM network (Global System for Mobile).
