This document provides instructions for a homework assignment on determining internal forces in statically indeterminate planar beams using the flexibility method. Students are asked to use the flexibility method to calculate reactions, draw free body diagrams, and draw internal force diagrams for three beams: a beam with both ends fixed and a uniform load, a beam with both ends fixed and a point load at the center, and a beam with both ends fixed subjected to a prescribed linear displacement at a node. Students are to compare their results to those obtained using SAP software and write conclusions about their findings and main learnings. The document also includes a table for students to provide information about task completion and peer evaluation.

UNIT 3. FLEXIBILITY METHOD

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

CIVIL ENGINEERING

Learning outcome

Determine the internal forces, and their diagrams, in statically indeterminate planar beams
using the Flexibility Method

Activity

In teams, determine the reactions of the following beams using the Flexibility Method.
Consider that 𝐸𝐼 = 8,000 𝑡𝑜𝑛 𝑚2 , the span length is 𝐿 = 6𝑚 and the load is 𝑤 = 2.5 𝑡𝑜𝑛/𝑚.
Draw the free-body diagram and the internal forces diagrams.

a) Beam with both ends fixed and a uniform load. Answer: moments at the ends are
𝑤𝐿2
12
.

b) Beam with both ends fixed and a point load at the center 𝑃 = 15.0 𝑡𝑜𝑛. Answer:
𝑃𝐿
moments at the ends are 8
.

1
c) Beam with both ends fixed subjected to prescribed linear displacement at node B
12𝐸𝐼
equal to -0.04 m (Settlement ∆). Answer: shear forces at the ends are 𝐿3
∆.

Compare your results with the ones obtained from the SAP.

Write your conclusions comparing the results and presenting your main learnings.

At the end of the document include a short description of the participation of each student
with dates. Only a couple of lines of description per student. Co-evaluate the team members;
if a student carried out all his activities on time and with good quality, he deserves a 100%
of the score. Use the following table to provide this information:

Co-evaluation
Student Activity Date
0-100%
Student name 1 Activity 1 of S1 Date of activity 1
Activity 2 of S2 Date of activity 2
Student name 2 Activity 1 of S2 Date of activity 2

Homework submission

Upload this homework on UADY Virtual platform. The file should be in PDF format. Try to
upload only one file with the final version of your homework. The file name must include the
last name of each team member without the accent mark (e.g.
Alvarez_Dzul_Ek_Perez_Rodriguez_H2.pdf).
