Chapter I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Background of the Study

The Government make a policy in educational systems, they truly realized the

importance of Reading comprehension; reading as one of the four language skills must be

taught for the students in the classroom especially to Senior high school students. Through

teaching and learning reading, the students are expected to be able to comprehend the reading

passages they read well. This is in line with the objective of reading instruction in senior high

school is to develop the students’ reading skill so that they can read and comprehend the texts

effectively and efficiently (Curriculum 2006).

Reading comprehension plays an important role in human life. Its role is realized as very

substantial knowledge for individual. The goal is to gain information from what the writer

conveyed through a text and uses this information to enrich his/her experiences and to improve

his/her intellectual ability.

We do know that reading comprehension is necessary in our daily lives, Reading is a

process of looking at written symbols and understanding the meaning of them. As well as to

Precisely comprehend the sentence of which how they’ll be learning to read better.

The reading comprehension is a basic requirement when the students enter in the

universities or colleges or decide to work in the industry. Therefore, it is necessary for the

teachers to give as many opportunities as possible by providing them with wide range of

effective and useful materials in reading as well as to develop students reading habit and

enhance their reading techniques. Students nowadays are observed having a great dilemma

when it comes to comprehending a text. Reading comprehension is said to be the heart and

goal of reading since the purpose of it is to gather meaning from the text. A good reader must

always see to it that reading materials is properly understood. Most students can easily read a

text but cannot comprehend its meaning. The study assesses the levels of reading

comprehension of grade 11 General Academic Strand Students of Buting Senior High School

towards the development of K-12 Context Appropriate Instructional Tool.

Students reading profile reveals that they read few times a week with 11-20 minutes

reading time, read only one to five books during free time and they use electronic sources when

reading. Students sometimes prefer to read the materials they want to read. With regards to

reading techniques, they sometime make predictions, guesses and set goals when reading,

however, students rarely summarize the story.

Statement of the problem

The focus of this study is to know the level of performance in reading comprehension of

Senior high school students of Mahardika Institute of Technology, Inc. specifically, this study will

attempt to answer the following questions:

1. What are the level of performance of Senior high school students of Mahardika Institute of

Technology, Inc. on reading Comprehension along the following variables:

a. Context Clues

b. Pronunciation

c. Vocabularies

3. Is there any significant difference along the mentioned variables?

Null hypothesis

There’s no significant difference in the level of performance on reading comprehension of

Senior high school along the above mentioned variables.

Significance of the study

This study can give insight, knowledge, clarifications about the level of performance of

students in reading comprehension. This study is deemed beneficial to the following group of

people and individuals.

To the Teachers, the results would provide them an immediate feedback on the exact level of

performance on their concerned students who are lack of reading comprehension skills.

To the Respondents, the results would help them determine their Level of performance in

reading comprehension and thus improve their reading comprehension skills as well.

To the Parents, this study will also be beneficial towards the parents to know the performance of

their child in reading comprehension. This study will help them to be more aware of the level of

performance of their children and help them improve the skills of their child in terms of reading.

To the School Administrator, the result will help them in planning for better instructional

materials that would enhance the teaching and learning inside the classroom.

To the Future Researchers, this study may be able to give them an idea and will serve as their

basis or guide.

Scope and Delimitation

In general, this study will focus on knowing the level of performance of Humanities and

Social Sciences grade 11 students of Mahardika Institute of Technology, Inc.

For the data gathering procedure, an assessment tool which is the questionnaire-

checklist will be utilized as the instrument of this research that will determine the level of

performance of selected senior high students in reading comprehension.

Definition of terms

The following terms were defined operationally in this study.

Reading comprehension - is the ability to read and to understand a text, process it to

comprehend what is the meaning of a words or a sentences.

Level of performance – Refers to the serve gathered by the studies in reading comprehension.

Senior High School- refers to the grade 11 students of Mahardika Institute of Technology, Inc.

enrolled in academic year 2022-2023.
