Why Florence?
If you have always dreamt of studying abroad in Italy, a Summer course in Florence
may prove to be a memorable experience! Considered the “cradle of the Renaissance”,
the city is laden with galleries such as The Uffizi and the Bargello Museum, art-filled
churches, and spectacular architecture.
Traditional handicrafts such as glassware and ceramics, wrought iron, leatherwork,
wares of precious metals, art reproductions are still of importance, along with
high-fashion clothing and shoe production.

What will you do?

‘Made in Italy’ is a synonym for experimentation, authenticity and timeless elegance;
a promise of high quality products and traditional craftsmanship.
This education path will guide you on a journey to discover and better comprehend
the quality of the Made in Italy products, especially in craftsmanship - based Italian
SMEs located in Tuscany and more specifically in Florence.
Our teachers, professionals working in the design field, will guide you to artisans’
workshop where you will see how skills, creativity and a sense of beauty, mixed to
technology and innovation, translate into authentic objects realised with elegance
and made with local materials.

Finally, our staff will assist you during the hands-on workshop where you will

Besides the design aesthetics, you will also acquire skills so as to propose
communication strategies for your project..

Who is this course aimed at?

People who are interested in the world of design and have no prior knowledge
or experience in the creative field. Skills such as drawing or sketching can be useful
even if not mandatory. Applicants must have the high school diploma, an upper-
intermediate level of English language and need to show strong motivation and the
ability to work in group.
Methodology
and Structure

This education path allows you to discover the authenticity and

the history of the Italian craftsmanship and to learn that the
success of the ‘Italian Design System’ is based on the dialogue
between handicraft and new technology. Through the three-
week course you will acquire basic design knowledge and
understand the supply chain that determines the quality of a
finished product.

The theoretical notions and expertises acquired will be applied

in modelling and design workshops. During the Final Project
presentation you will show the results of the work carried out
during the three weeks.

The Summer course includes a strategic combination of

theoretical lessons, held by designers and professionals in the
field, cultural tours to museums, and visits to handicraft stores.
Active participation in discussions with guest lecturer and site
visit attendance is fundamental.
