MAT1020
MAT1020
1. SCOPE
1.1 This specification provides requirements for high strength (HS), hot rolled (HR) sheet and strip
steel. These materials include high strength low alloy (HSLA) and structural (Grade A only) steels.
There are three grades covered in the specification with Grade A1 identified as the preferred grade, see
Table 1. Each of the grades may be specified for sheet or strip product forms. This specification is
intended to replace Former CNH Company Material Specifications listed in Annex B and should be used
on all applicable new and updated drawings.
1.2.1 MAT1020 Revision F established new Grades with chemistry and mechanical property
requirements. Former Grades are withdrawn and are replaced as shown in Table 1. The new grades
shall be used where materials on existing drawings are updated by Design Engineering per this
specification. Where these material updates are made to a drawing, the change shall be documented in
the revision notes on the drawing. Annex B, Table B3 lists National standard materials previously
referenced for the MAT1020 Grades that shall not be used on new or updated drawings.
2. RELATED SPECIFICATIONS
3. APPLICATION
3.1 HS hot rolled steel sheet and strip is produced to minimum mechanical properties and chemical
composition requirements. These materials are generally microalloyed to meet minimum mechanical
property requirements. HS steel has higher minimum yield and tensile strength than low carbon
commercial quality HR steel. It has good weldability, formability, and a high strength to weight ratio that
may be beneficial in applications where weight reduction is important. When welding Grade C1 materials
the weld electrode filler metal shall meet or exceed the base metal strength requirements.
3.1.1 HS hot rolled sheet and strips are commonly produced in the thickness range from 1.2 to 6 mm
(0.044 – 0.230 in) in North America; thickness range may be limited to 1.2 to 4.5 mm (0.044 to 0.180 in.)
when widths exceed 1200 mm (48 in.). HS hot rolled sheet in Europe is produce in thickness from under
2.0 to 8.0 mm while hot rolled strip is available in thickness that range from 0.80 to 15.0 mm. Nominal
thickness tolerances are equal or tighter for strip than sheet; see national standards for tolerance values.
For materials greater than 6 mm (0.25 in.) thick see MAT1025 (87021627) High Strength HR plate.
3.1.2 HS hot rolled strip may be produced as single width or in multiple widths subsequently slit to the
desired width. When the width of the product form equals or exceeds 600 mm (23⅝ in.) it qualifies as a
sheet. If the width of product form is less than 600 mm (23⅝ in.) it qualifies as a strip.
3.2 Sheet and strip are typically provided with mill or cut edges. HS strips hot rolled to narrower
widths are also produced with square edges per some national standards. Strip cut to narrower widths
from sheet does not qualify as strip unless it meets strip requirements. Strip may be ordered over sheet
when edge condition, tolerance and reduced cost due to avoiding cutting or slitting of strips from sheets
or coils is justified by CNH manufacturing locations.
3.3 ROPS/FOPS: MAT1020 Grades A1 and B1 steel may be used as part of a ROPS/FOPS
structure. Where these Grades are specified, in accordance with applicable national standards,
ROPS/FOPS structure performance testing must be conducted at cold temperature (-18°C) conditions as
Charpy Impact properties are not guaranteed for these Grades. Refer to the MAT1145 ROPS-FOPS
Steel specification for material identification, documentation, and performance testing requirements.
MAT1020 Grades may be specified for ROPS/FOPS applications as shown in Section 7.2.3.2.
3.5 Pickling, descaling or other surface preparation may be required for applications, such as painted
parts, where improved surface finish is needed. Where surface finish is critical to the application, this
requirement should be negotiated with the supplier and noted on the purchase order.
3.6 HS sheet or strip that is to be laser cut may require improved flatness and reduced residual stress
compared to conventional sheet or strip steel. Cold reduced or temper rolled sheet or strip may be
required to meet these requirements. Manufacturing and/or purchasing shall negotiate the correct
material conditions with suppliers to meet these requirements in addition to requirements in designated
National Standards.
4. REQUIREMENTS
4.1 HS sheet and strip steel supplied according to MAT1020 shall meet all requirements of this
specification, applicable National Standards, and any special requirements on the engineering drawing.
4.1.1 Unless otherwise specified MAT1020 Grade A1 (preferred) shall be supplied to this specification.
4.2.1 Annex A provides a partial listing of National Standards materials identified as acceptable for
supply of materials to MAT1020 grades. Other National Standard materials, not listed in Annex A, that
comply with MAT1020 requirements may also be supplied. In general, it is permissible to produce a part
from any of these comparable National Standard grades for the corresponding MAT1020 Grade when no
special strength or composition requirements are specified.
4.2.2 CNH Industrial Design Engineering must consider the differences in dimensional tolerances and
properties of National Standard plate materials supplied to this specification to assure functionality,
reliability, and serviceability of a part when manufactured in different parts of the world. In applications
where these differences can not be compensated for in the design, the material may be restricted to a
specific National Standard material as described in CNH MAT1003 (86979049) Metallic Material
Designations on Engineering Drawings.
4.3 CHEMISTRY
Materials supplied to this specification must conform to the composition limits in Table 2.

(1) Values for Nb (Cb), V, Ti, and Mo apply only where used as microalloying element. The sum of these elements shall be 0.22% maximum
(2) Aluminum values apply only where it is used for steel deoxidation.
Materials supplied to this specification shall meet mechanical property requirements in Table 3.
MAT1020 materials used for fabrication and validation of performance in part prototypes must comply
with Table 3 mechanical property requirements for the specified Grade. National Standard materials
listed in Table A1, or equivalent steels, shall be used to produce prototypes. Steel mill material
certificates are required to confirm chemistry and mechanical properties for the material supplied. Use of
higher strength materials for a specified Grade is not permitted. For example, where Grade C1 is
specified, ASTM A1011 HSLAS-F Grade 80 may not be substituted for ASTM A1011 HSLAS-F Grade 70
to produce part prototypes.
Unless otherwise specified, material shall be supplied as-rolled and dry, normally without removing the
surface hot rolled oxide or scale. Where product is specified to be pickled or blasted to remove surface
scale it shall be furnished oiled. The delivery condition shall be agreed upon between the product
supplier and purchasing location.
4.7.1 Sheet and strip products shall conform to the permissible variations in dimensions as specified in
the applicable National Standards for the material supplied for an application.
4.7.2 It is recommended that the thickness range be specified on the engineering drawing per
guidelines in CNH DWGD100 Specifying Steel Sheet Thickness.
4.8 It may be required per the National Standard to specify the required edge condition for a sheet
and strip to the supplier.
5. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Optional conditions or grades listed in National Standards may be applied as special requirements
(SPCL). These special requirements or grades shall be indicated on the engineering drawing and apply
to both the CNH grade and National Standard specified, see example Section 7.2.3.
6.1 All sheet and strip material supplied to this specification shall be equivalent in every respect to
samples approved by the purchasing CNH location. While the purchasing location may test samples
from incoming shipments for quality assurance, the supplier is responsible for ensuring that shipments
meet the stated requirements without depending upon the purchaser’s inspection.
6.2 All National Standards and related test methods are to be latest issue unless otherwise specified.
6.3 Tensile Strength, Yield Strength, Elongation determined per the following methods or equivalent:
• ISO 6892-1 Metallic Materials-Tensile Testing; Test at Room Temperature
• ASTM E8M – 00b Tension Testing of Metallic Materials (Metric), dimensions per Figure 8
7. DRAWING SPECIFICATIONS
7.1 Specifying a restricted (RSTR) or special (SPCL) material may require the use of a significant
characteristic per CNH Engineering Procedure ENPJ100 (86619032). This determination will be made
as part of the design review process.
7.1.1 The title block of engineering drawings shall contain material designations as described in CNH
MAT1003 (86979049) Metallic Material Designations on Engineering Drawings.
7.2 This specification contains specific steel composition and mechanical property requirements that
are additional to those in the National Standards of the referenced materials. The MAT1020 specification
must therefore be reviewed to assure compliance with these specific requirements. Where MAT1020
materials are specified in the drawing title block, the CNH Industrial Material block shall include the
generic material name and shape, the CNH Industrial Material Specification number, and grade. The
Local Material block shall specify the following. It shall indicate “SEE CNH MAT1020” for standard
material designations where applicable National Standard materials are permitted for the specified
MAT1020 Grade, see Section 7.2.1. It shall contain “SEE NOTES” for RSTR or SPCL specified
materials; the “Material” drawing note shall include the applicable material specification and Grade and/or
any special requirements such as surface finish, see Sections 7.2.2 and 7.2.3.
