CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of study

Hospitals are critical facilities that provide healthcare services to the community. The success of
a hospital depends on the quality of its infrastructure, which includes the building, its systems,
and equipment. As such, civil engineering plays a significant role in the design, construction, and
maintenance of hospital buildings. This project aims to design and analyze a modern hospital
building that meets the needs of patients, healthcare providers ,and support staff. The proposed
hospital building will be a multi-storey structure with state-of-the-art medical facilities, patient
rooms, administrative offices, and other support facilities.

The design process will involve a comprehensive analysis of the site, environmental factors, and
the needs of the hospital’s various stakeholders. Our project team will use advanced computer-
aided design (CAD) software to develop 3D models of the building, which will enable us to
visualize the structure and identify potential design issues. The analysis phase will involve
structural, mechanical, and sanitary engineering analyses to ensure that the building is safe,
efficient, and meets all relevant building codes and regulations. The project team will also
conduct life cycle cost analyses to determine the most cost-effective design solutions for the
proposed hospital building.

1.2 OBJECTIVES
 To conduct the survey which helps in planning and design of propsed hospital building.
 The proposed hospital building will incorporate sustainable design principles to minimize
its environmental impact and reduce operating costs.
 For the vision to do something for the people of Surkhet district.
 To identify the key design consideration in building and to understand the construction
processes involved in building a hospital.
 To analyze the various system required in hospital building such as HVAC, plumbing and
sanitary system.

1.3 SIGNIFICANCE/SCOPE

The significance of building a final year engineering lies in the fact that it will provide us with an
opportunity to apply knowledge and skills we have acquired engineering education. This type of
project typically requires to work independently or as a team to apply critical thinking and
problem solving skill and to demonstrate a deep understanding of engineering principles and
practice involved the project. Building a successful engineering project can also demonstrate
ability to work in a team, to communicate effectively and to manage resources such as time,
budget and work materials.

Overall, the scope and significance of building project cannot be overstated. It is crucial
component of engineering education that provides with practical, hand on experience and to
prepare for successful careers in chosen field.

1.4 LIMITATIONS

 Our project mainly focuses on the structural analysis and design phase of building but it
doesn’t include architectural design of building.
 The drawings of plan don’t include service drawing like electrical works.
 Design of lift may not be included in our project.
 The design is fully based on the terms and conditions of NBC and IS codes and other
associated codes.
 This study covers only the particular proposed area.

1.5 DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

CHAPTER 2 METHODOLOGY
This project will adopt a literature review approach. The literature review will involve an
extensive search for published material such as conference proceedings and other relevant
materials on the design and construction of hospital building. The literature review will focus on
identifying the key design consideration in building a hospital understand the construction
processes involved, analyzing the various system required and exploring the challenge faced.

2.1 Theoretical/Conceptual framework

In civil engineering a theoretical and conceptual framework refers to a set of concepts and
principles that are used to explain and analyze the particular process. A hospital project is
normally a financial enterprise in which developer of such project aim at minimizing the cost and
maximizing the benefits of the project. The theoretical framework should be based on relevant
theories and models in hospital design. It involves the identification of the theoretical principles
that underlie the design and construction of a hospital as a health care facility. The framework is
based on the understanding of the physical, social, and cultural aspects of health care delivery in
a specific socio-economic and political context.

The methodology involves the following steps:

a) Identification of the purpose and objectives of the hospital building project.

b) Definition of the relevant theoretical frameworks that inform hospital design and
construction, such as the ecological model, social determinants of health, and evidence-based
design.
c) Identification and assessment of the physical and spatial requirements of the hospital,
including the functional areas, patient and staff flow, safety and security measures, and
technological requirements.
d) Selection of appropriate design strategies and technologies that align with the theoretical and
contextual frameworks, such as sustainable building practices, universal design, and
telemedicine.
e) Evaluation of the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed hospital building design,
including cost-benefit analysis, stakeholder feedback, and post-occupancy evaluations.

FINAL REPORT PREPARATION

For this project, analysis and design of the given building is aimed to be done using Indian
Standard Code for practice and design aids (Special Publication of Bureau of Indian Standard)
which follows the limit state design method. A building has to perform many functions
satisfactorily. Amongst these functions are the utility of the building for the intended use and
occupancy, structural safety, fire safety; and compliance with hygienic, sanitation, ventilation
and daylight standards. The design of the building is dependent upon the minimum requirements
prescribed in codes for each of the above functions.

The analysis and design of the building in this project will be carried out following the below
listed methods:

Preliminary design of beam, column and slab:

It will be done by considering the criteria as stated by IS 456:2000 which are based on the
principles of Limit state method.

Load Calculation:

With the help of the architectural drawing and the preliminary designed sizes of beam, column
and slab, the idealization and estimation of the loads will be done in accordance to the IS codes.

Modeling and Analysis of frame structure:

The space frame of the building will be modeled with the help of ETABS. ETABS is a basic tool
for the execution of analysis. It is a program based on the Finite Element Method. Due to
possible actions in the building, the stresses and displacements obtained by the help of ETABS
will be used for the design of the members. As all the members of our group will participate in
the learning program on ETABS, using ETABS will ease us into the modeling and the analysis
step of our project. We also plan to broaden our horizon on learning the scope and vast
utilization of ETABS throughout the completion of project.

Design method:

Design of RCC members is done based on the limit state method of design following IS
456:2000 as the code of practice. So, we will be using limit state method for the design of our
selected building.

Limit State Method:

It uses the concept of the probability and based on the application of method of statistic to the
variation that occurs in the practice in the loads acting in the structures or in the strength of the
material. In the method of design based on the limit state concept, the structure shall be designed
to withstand safety all loads liable to act on it thorough out its life, it shall also satisfy the
serviceability requirements. Such as limitation on deflection and cracking should be based on
characteristic value for materials strength and applied load.
