Problem Set 2

This document contains a 7 question physics problem set regarding kinematics including: 1) The displacement, velocity, and acceleration of a particle moving along the x-axis according to an expression for its position over time. 2) The average acceleration and instantaneous acceleration of a particle with a given velocity expression over time. 3) Graph matching questions regarding distance-time and speed-time graphs of runners and a car to describe their motion. 4) A speed-time graph of a bus journey with multiple segments to describe the motion in each segment using kinematic terms like accelerating, decelerating, constant speed, and at rest.

PHY 115 Problem set 2

Problem set 2
Q1)
A particle moves along the x axis. Its
position varies with time according to
the expression.
x(t)= -4 t + 2 t2 m/s
where x is in meters and t is in
seconds. The position–time graph
for this motion is shown in Figure.
Note that the particle moves in the
negative x direction for the first second
of motion, is momentarily at rest at the
moment t=1 s, and moves in the
positive x direction at times t >1 s.
a) Determine the displacement of the particle in the time intervals t = 0 to t = 1
s and t = 1 s to t = 3 s.
b) Calculate the average velocity during these two-time intervals.
c) Estimate the instantaneous velocity of the particle at t =2.5 s.

Q2)
The velocity of a particle moving along the x axis varies in time according to the
expression.
v(t) = (40 – 5 t2) m/s
a) Calculate the average acceleration in the time interval t=0 to t = 2.0 s.
b) Determine the instantaneous acceleration at t = 2.0 s.
c)
Q3) Which of the graphs shows that one of runners started 10 yards further
ahead of the other? Explain your answer.
