Brief general description
--`,,`,,`,``,,`,,`,`,,,,`,`,`,``-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---

Network Rail MPBl's Civils Investment Efficiency Strategy and Action Plan identifies
that standardisation of commonly used designsand det& within the hard structures
and earthworks disciplines could achieve significant cost savings through: -
Reducing overall design costs.
Facilitating the streamlining of the technical approvals process.
Reducing contractorlsubcontractor costs associated with detailing uncertainty.
Mitigating maintenance liability.
Providing increased familiarity with the delivered product amongst all parties
leading to increased productivity.
The professional services remit requires the development of a library of standard
designsldetails with accompanying guidance notes on their application. Project
delivery is scheduled in three distinct phases. Tony Gee and partners LLP -
commission is currently limited to phases one and two only.

Phase one, commenced in January 2006 developed previously approved brick and
masonry repair standard designsldetails currently in use at Yerritory level'. Converted
onto a standard drawing template, they have been submitted to Network Rail for
comment. These will be incorporated into the phase two submissions submitted to
Network Rail's Director of Civil Engineering for endorsement.

Phase two extends phase one to develop standard designs and details for a number

Method of constructionl erection envisaged, and any temporary works known to
be required.

A safe method of construction shall be derived for the particular site which will include
the considerations listed below. The methodology is likely to be as follows:
Drainage improvement works will be scoped by visual examination of each site
by Geotechnical and/or Drainage Engineer. A linear level survey will be
undertaken as required at each site requiring linear drain runs, to enable
design of adequate pipe sizes, gradients and invert levels. Intrusive ground
investigation is to undertaken as required using small plant (window or
windowless sampling) or hand dug trial pits.
Wherever practicable, new cutting crest drains will be constructed by hand or
with mini-excavation plant, to faciliate work within the Network Rail boundary;
New slope face drains will be constructed using appropriate road-rail plant
andlor from the crest where access permits.
Embankment toe drains will be constructed using suitable excavation plant,
subject to temporary access agreement with the adjacent landowner.
The works will be designed and wnstructed so as not to reduce the existing
stability of adjacent Network Rail structures or earthworks. Temporary support
to drain trenches will be used as directed by a Geotechnical Engineer if poor
ground conditions are encountered.

Design criteria (Earthwork)

An improvement in the calculated Factor of Safety for existing earthworks slope

stability (based on structural geotechnical limit state equilibrium methods) is not
required. The proposed drainage improvement works are to reduce the risk of
uncontrolled water discharges on existing earthwork slopes affecting the safe
operation of the railway.

Design criteria (other structures)

Live or superimposed loading, including floor loading if applicable.

Covers to drain access manholes and inspection chambers shall be capable of

resisting a live load of 1.5kN without suffering damage or permanent deflection, in
accordance with Network Rail Company Standard NR/SP/CIV/044.

The maximum total external load on the pipeline must not exceed the minimum value
of the pipe strength multiplied by the appropriate value of the bedding factor and
divided by a suitable design factor of safety. All culverts shall be sized based on the
recommendations in the ClRlA Culvert Design Guide (Report No. 168)

Design life

Design life of new drains will be critically dependant on adequate periodic

maintenance and the quoted design life periods are based on the assumption that this
is undertaken.

New sub-surface drains with geotextile components will have a minimum design life of
50 years1 Lined ditch drains will have a minimum design life of 25 years. The design
life of unlined earth ditches is to be a minimum of 10 years. Temporary bagged
headwall will have a minimum 10-year design life for pipe sizes not exceeding 600
mm diameter.

Run-off to new drains will be calculated by a drainage engineer on the basis of local
catchment size and characteristics to allow the size of pipes and their required falls to
be determined.

Where the entire drainage system to outfall is being constructed, new drains and
outfalls will be designed on the basis of a 1 in 20 year return period rainfall event. For
sub-surface drains incorporating porous or perforated pipe, the pipe will be sized such
that the drain trench may become surcharged during events more severe than a 1 in 2
year return period without causing surface flooding.

Drain pipe inverts will be installed to self-cleaning falls to comply with

14 Note 5 - headwall to be fully designed (including reinforcement) for the following
cases: (1) level retained ground (cohesive or granular fill), (2) lin2 granular fill slope,
and (3) l i n 2.5 cohesive fill slope. Brickwork bonding details to be provided. Spacing
between twin pipes to be specified.
15a Note 7 - the depression of invert on the outlet headwall is likely to promote a silting
risk. Designer to consider either an alternative detail or provide hydraulic justification
f. Note 21 -the term 'all in ballast' has the potential to be misinterpreted and is to be
changed
15b Change reference to 'Temporary Bagged Headwall' to 'Bagged Headwall (Limited

16 Note 22 - delete this note and instead incorporate appropriate requirements within the
standard details.
17a The practicality of placing blinding around the outlet headwall key is questioned -
detail to be reviewed in generic Form B submission.
17b In the generic Form B submission clarify the requirements for small diameter pipe in
the case of the reinforced and un-reinforced haunch to culvert.

Drawing NRICIVISDl322 rev. P I

18 Delete all slope run-off baffles. Standard catch pit detail required.
19 Note 15 - catchpit centres may be increased to 50m centres along the crest of
cuttings. Note 16 - clearances between a 2.0m deep drain and crest to be circa
2.0m.
20 Note 19 - adjust 200mm to 225mm diameter pipe. Minimum gradient for 450mm pipe
to be 1 in 600. Clarify the meaning of the statement that further pipe hydraulic
analysis is required. Note 20 - delete
21 lnsitu Type A - . Change permeable membrane to erosion protection matting.
Erosion protection not required over concrete. Type F crest ditch - 1200mm depth to
be measured from adjacent ground levels. Type H crest ditch - 1000mm clearance
required to crest.

Drawing NfUCIVISD1323 rev. P I

22 Notes 3 & 17 are repeats.
23a Change reference to 'Temporary Bagged Headwall' to 'Bagged' Headwall (Limited

23b Reinforced concrete apron for temporary headwall appears to be 'over engineered'.
State gradient limits for bagwork. Section C-C: also show indicative headwall profile
for pipe discharging into ditch that is on same alignment
24 Flap valves - to be included on separate 'drainage details' drawing. State applicable
design requirements for flap valve.
