Cows in India
In India we can find many endangered animals
such as elephants, tigers, hippos and rhinos.
There is one more animal that is very important
here: the cow.

Cows are common animals in many countries around the world, but in India they
are very special. They can walk freely in the streets in cities and villages. Cars and
motorbikes stop for the cows to cross or take a different road when a cow is sitting
in the middle of the street. Nobody can move them out of the way.

In big cities, like New Delhi, there are traffic problems because of these animals. There
are about 40,000 of them in New Delhi and they make the city very dirty because they
go through the rubbish in the streets. Today, there’s a new job in this city: cow-catcher.
These men go around New Delhi looking for cows. When they see one, they catch it
and take it to the countryside. The cows are big, with big horns and they like walking
in the city. So the cow-catcher’s job isn’t easy and it’s often quite dangerous.

Cows are endangered animals in India. _____

Sometimes elephants and tigers walk in the streets in India. _____

People use cars to push the cows out of the street. _____

In New Delhi, there are about 40,000 cows. _____

Cow-catchers travel by motorbike to look for cows. _____

It isn’t always safe to work as a cow-catcher. _____

Beatboxing
‘Beatbox’ is the music and rhythm that some people make with their mouths. They use
their voice, lips, throat and tongue and sometimes a microphone to make sounds.
When they ‘beatbox’ they sound like drums and other percussion instruments. ‘Beatbox’
was first popular in the USA in the 1980s, and it’s a big part of rap and hip-hop music.
The name of this type of music comes from the ‘beatbox’ or ‘drum machine’. This is a
small machine that can create drum beats. Musicians and bands use it when there isn’t
a drummer. But it’s an old invention and today there are better gadgets. There are also
‘human beatboxes’.
One of the first ‘beatboxers’ was Douglas E. Fresh. He’s an American rapper and he was
very popular in the 1980s. Today, there are many famous ‘beatboxers’ and they are better
than those in the past. For example, Rahzel – another musician from the USA – is famous
for singing and beatboxing at the same time. Beatboxers today don’t only copy the sound
of drums. They make many more sounds, like birds singing or the sound of the sea.

Rhinos live in Africa and Asia and they are very

big animals. The only animal that is bigger is the
African elephant. African rhinos always have two
horns on their nose. Other types of rhinos have
only one. They are endangered animals because
people hunt them to sell their horns. In 1900,
there were about 500,000 rhinos in the world.
In 1970, there were 70,000 and today there are
about 29,000 in their natural habitat.

There are five different species in the world and we can find two of them in Africa: the
white rhino and the black rhino. They are bigger than rhinos in Asia. It’s strange but
the skin of the white and the black rhino has the same grey colour. The difference is
that the black rhino is smaller. Both types of rhinos see very badly. They can hear and
smell very well, and they run very fast, too – about 50 kilometres per hour! They eat
only leaves and grass, but they can be dangerous when there are people around. It’s
probably because they can’t see well.

Rhinos are _____________________ than African elephants.

Rhinos can have up to _____________________ horns.

They are in danger because people want their _____________________ .
