CPS Assignment Question CPE656

This document outlines an assignment for a course on Petroleum Refining Engineering. The assignment involves writing a report that evaluates challenges faced by oil refineries in meeting future demands and sustainability goals. Students are asked to discuss challenges of expanding capacity and producing varied products, and analyze refiners' efforts over 5 years to address issues and support the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The report must differentiate refiners' work based on relevant SDGs, provide technology examples, and consider advantages. It will be evaluated based on addressing two course outcomes, one program outcome, and complexity criteria related to engineering problems and required knowledge.

Credit Hours 3.0 (3 HOURS LECTURE AND 1 HOUR TUTORIAL)

Evaluation GROUP ASSIGNMENT 25%

1.0 INTRODUCTION

This assignment utilises a problem-based learning approach related to the SDGs and the latest technology
applied in the oil refinery industry. This assignment is motivated by the understanding of HSE applied in the
oil refinery’s unit operations.

2.0 COURSE AND PROGRAMME OUTCOMES WITH COMPLEX ENGINEERING PROBLEMS &
KNOWLEDGE PROFILE

This assignment addresses two (2) course outcomes and one (1) programme outcomes (PO) which are
mapped to complex engineering problem characteristics (WP) and the required knowledge profiles (WK)
as shown in Table 1.

3.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE ASSIGNMENT

At the end of this assignment, the students should be able to:

a) Evaluate the challenges and HSE practice in the entire oil refinery industry.
b) Explore the current sustainable technology to increase the market demands and capacity expansion
of the refinery.
c) Analyse the efforts made by the refiners to achieve SDGs

4.0 DESCRIPTION

In the global energy system, oil refining is a crucial component. It is expected that the world's oil
consumption will reach 116 million barrels per day (MMbd) in 2025 with refined goods like gasoline and
diesel accounting for most of this demand. With major global refinery capacity increases (Figure 1),
demand growth for various products is starting to diverge, which will influence margins and trade flows for
fuels and petrochemicals. Additionally, as crude supply increases, lighter and sweeter grades are
substituting for heavier ones. This will influence refiners' profitability as well as the viability of heavy
crude processing plant investments. The market will likely get more difficult and complicated for refiners
in the future as well as to achieve the global goals adopted by the United Nations such as the 17
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Figure 1: Global oil refining capacity (2018-2025)

(Ref: https://about.bnef.com/blog/future-downstream-oil/)

Based on the above scenario, please provide a report that elaborates on the challenges that might be
faced by the refineries to cater the capacity expansion and variety of product’s demands in the future
refining market as well as evaluate the efforts made by petroleum refiners over the past five years to
cater these issues and support the SDGs. You also need to be able to differentiate between the relevant
SDG initiatives and incorporate cutting-edge technology and sustainable health, safety, and
environmental (HSE) practises into your report.

(25 marks)
5.0 YOUR TASK

a. Your report should elaborate the challenges and efforts made by the refiners to cater the future
market demands as well as achieving the relevant SDGs in the petroleum refining industry.

b. You must differentiate the efforts according to the relevant SDG initiatives by providing the examples
of cutting-edge or new technology used in the form of diagram or PFD to enhance the products variety
demands and HSE. Consider the advantages for refiners when evaluating these initiatives.

c. In the introduction, you may list all the seventeen SDGs to help you with the evaluation and select
the most focus SDG by the petroleum refining industry and provide the references.

d The SDGs efforts must be within the last five years approach.
