Level 1-9 Syllabus (2016-2020) FINAL
Level 1-9 Syllabus (2016-2020) FINAL
The Levels syllabus conforms to contemporary gymnastics and includes basic routines and skills performed on all apparatus. It accommodates many
gymnasts and coaches of varying abilities and with a variety of facilities at their disposal. This syllabus is progressive in the way that the physical
conditioning and skills in one level provides the basis for the skills in the next level - a gymnast may progress to the next level once he is able to
satisfactorily perform the skills in his current level.
Allan Chadwick, Derick Scholtz, and Jesse Kitzen-Abelson for the coordination of input from members and related administration.
Warren Field, Robert Liefeldt and Sonja Winde for co-coordinating this project in its previous editions since first published in 2001.
A special thanks to Bobby Budai for the many hours spent on the previous editions.
We thank these organisations for their experts, academies and published research. They made available to South Africa invaluable information and
Thank you to all those from around the country who sent in their recommendations as well as all coaches, judges, parents and gymnasts who
brought to our attention the problems and pitfalls in previous programs. Last but not least, thank you to the regions and clubs that helped us test
the water and gave us invaluable feedback, and an opportunity to fine-tune this work.
Layout
There are no drawings of the FULL routines. Where possible, a drawing of the required element is given with each routine. Routine descriptions are very
precise (and sometimes long-winded), but this has been done to facilitate good posture and aesthetic gymnastics performance. Where possible, the
wording and terminology in the routine descriptions are as found in the FIG Code of Points (this should also facilitate cross-referencing). The
difficulty values of the elements will facilitate the judging of a gymnast who is unable to perform an element, or leaves out a portion of the routine,
or does not complete his routine. THE DRAWINGS SERVE ONLY AS AN ILLUSTRATION OF THE ELEMENTS – IN ALL CASES WHERE THERE IS DOUBT, THE WRITTEN
TEXT WILL BE CONSIDERED CORRECT. THE DIRECTION OF THE DRAWINGS IS ALSO NOT AN INDICATION OF THE DIRECTION OR FLOW OF THE ROUTINE – the aim is to
illustrate only the element itself.
Age Groups
Each Level is sub-divided into age groups in order to increase the number of competitive sections. The gymnast’s age on the 1st of January in the
year of competition is taken.
Level 1 – Level 7 routines are judged out of 9.50 points and have the possibility of an additional 0.50 points in bonus for difficulty. The Difficulty
value of each routine is the total of 5 elements worth 0.90 each, plus a bonus element worth 0.50. The Execution value of each routine is a total of
5.00 points. The Difficulty Value and the Execution value is added together to give the final score. Penalties are taken from the added score.
D-score (5 x 0.90 + 0.50 = 5.00) + E-score (5.00) = Score – Penalties = Final score
Level 8 routines are judged out of 9.50 points and have the possibility of an additional 0.50 points in bonus for difficulty. The Difficulty value of
each routine is the total of 6 elements worth 0.75 each, plus a bonus element worth 0.50. The Execution value of each routine is a total of 5.00
points. The Difficulty Value and the Execution value is added together to give the final score. Penalties are taken from the added score.
D-score (6 x 0.75 + 0.50 = 5.00) + E-score (5.00) = Score – Penalties = Final score
Level 9 routines are judged according to the FIG Code of Points, where the difficulty score is made up out of the 7 highest counting elements (6 +
dismount). The Execution value of each routine is a total of 10.00 points. The Difficulty Value and the Execution value is added together to give the
final score. Penalties are taken from the added score.
D-score (7 highest counting elements + structure groups) + E-score (10.00) = Score – Penalties = Final score
Bonus Elements
The possibility to achieve bonus points exists in various forms:
Modifying or upgrading an element (by increasing amplitude, strength or flexibility)
Replacing an element with a more difficult element
Adding an element
Bonus elements or the bonus requirements are indicated in highlighted text between brackets within the routine description. Bonus points will be
awarded when the bonus element is attempted and achieved without any single large error (0.50). An exception is on Vault, where the bonus is a
stuck landing. This bonus is awarded if the gymnast lands completely still. Normal landing deductions apply, e.g. for arm swings and legs apart. Feet
movement is allowed as per the Landing rules in the Code of Points.
2. To represent one’s region at the forthcoming National Competition, gymnasts must score according to the requirements set by the MTC – please
refer to the applicable Table on page 12.
3. Gymnasts who are not ready on all apparatus yet may participate on fewer apparatus at Club and Regional competitions.
Progression/Regression
4. A gymnast should only be entered into a Level for which he is suitably prepared to participate in safely.
5. The Level in which a gymnast is entered remains entirely at the discretion of the gymnast’s coach, regardless of the gymnast’s
score or Level at previous competitions. However, a gymnast may only participate at the Zone Festival, Gym Games or National Championships
in the Level for which he qualified at a qualifying competition.
Competitions
General
6. Only gymnasts who are registered with the South African Gymnastics Federation may learn, practice and compete the routines in the Levels
syllabus. An exception is made for gymnasts registered in Region 5 countries.
7. All competitions will be judged according to the latest edition of the FIG Code of Points.
8. The rights, responsibilities & duties of gymnasts, coaches and judges during competitions are governed by the latest edition of the FIG Code of
Points.
13. Apparatus warm-up prior to the competition should be calculated at 1 ½ minutes per gymnast of the largest group per apparatus.
14. NO “one-touch” is permitted during the competition for Level 1-Level 8 routines.
15. The National Championships and the Gym Games have to be based on a Full Warm-up and then Full competition-principle. The Zone Festivals
may be organized on a Warm-up & Compete principle.
Apparatus
16. The height of the apparatus for the different levels & age groups appear in the apparatus specifications on page 11; also refer to the FIG Code
of Points where applicable.
17. Supplementary mats, modified apparatus and starting aids may be utilized where permitted.
18. All mounts must be performed as per FIG rules, except where otherwise stated in the apparatus specifications.
Competition attire
19. Gymnasts competing in Levels 1 to 3 must participate in a gymnastics singlet and short pants. Gymnasts competing in Levels 4 to 9 must
participate in full FIG regulation competition attire. Long gymnastics pants, socks and/or slippers that are black or the darker shades of blue, brown
or green are not permitted.
Scoring
20. A gymnast entering the individual All-Around competition in Levels 1 to Level 4 must perform prescribed routines on the Floor, Vault, Parallel
Bars and Horizontal Bar. The sum of the final marks from all four apparatus determines the individual All-Around rankings in each age group. The
winner in each age group has the highest individual All-Around score.
A gymnast entering the individual All-Around competition in Levels 5 to Level 9 must perform prescribed routines on the Floor, Pommel horse and/or
Mushroom, Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars and Horizontal Bar. The sum of the final marks from all six apparatus determines the individual All-Around
rankings in each age group. The winner in each age group has the highest individual All-Around score.
21. The highest final mark for each apparatus determines the winner for that apparatus.
Appeals
23. Appeals are allowed. Only the Start Value of an exercise may be questioned. The appeal, together with R100, must be submitted by the Team
Manager/Coach to the Competition Manager before the start of the competition in the next rotation. If it is the last rotation then the appeal must be
submitted within 5 minutes after the end of the competition.
26. Coaches must be dressed neatly in the appropriate tracksuit and foot wear. NO SHORTS & “PLAKKIES” ALLOWED.
Judging
27. If a standard element is attempted but not recognized and awarded, it may be repeated to regain the value (except for dismounts). Relevant
deductions will be taken for extra swings, falls and technical and execution errors.
28. Should a gymnast perform a ZERO vault, as defined by the FIG, he may repeat it once with a deduction of 1.00 point from the Start value of the
second attempt. No more attempts are permitted.
29. Execution deductions for specific skills may exceed a given skill’s assigned difficulty value. A gymnast may, however, not receive less than the
total of his D-score (which is 4.50 if he performed and was awarded for all standard elements).
30. Prescribed routines must be executed exactly as prescribed. The routine may, however, be changed from left to right bias in its totality. If the
gymnast leaves out an element/ valued part indicated in UPPERCASE, deduct the assigned value of the element (from the Difficulty score). This
does not apply to simple steps, turns or arm movements.
31. Where the floor exercise description states “2-3 running steps”, there is no limit to running steps in these instances.
32. A deduction of maximum 0.30 per routine will be taken for non-value parts, or parts thereof, that are omitted/ added. This excludes steps
to change onto the right/left leg and in cases where non-value parts have to be left out because of a bonus element being performed.
33. Gymnasts performing elements and turns to the incorrect side, which results in a change in exercise pattern/routine construction, will incur a
deduction of 0.30 each time.
RULES SHOULD NOT BE MISINTERPRETED BY TAKING THEM IN ISOLATION, BUT MUST BE READ IN THE
CONTEXT OF THE COMPLETE DOCUMENT.

A Bonus element can be a modification, an upgrade or a replacement of a standard element. It can also be an additional element that must
be added into the routine. Please refer to General Rule nr.34 for how Bonus elements are to be judged. Please note the special block in which
the Bonus is illustrated and where it is indicated on how to include the bonus element into the routine:
There are no drawings of the FULL routines. THE DRAWINGS SERVE ONLY AS AN ILLUSTRATION OF THE ELEMENTS – IN ALL CASES
WHERE THERE IS DOUBT, THE WRITTEN TEXT WILL BE CONSIDERED CORRECT. THE DIRECTION OF THE DRAWINGS IS ALSO NOT AN
INDICATION OF THE DIRECTION OR FLOW OF THE ROUTINE – the aim is to illustrate only the element itself.
ALL PARTS of the routine is evaluated by the E-jury for technical and aesthetic errors as per the latest FIG Code of Points. Execution
deductions for specific skills may exceed a given skill’s assigned difficulty value. A gymnast may, however, not receive less than the total of
his D-score (which is 4.50 if he was awarded the value of all standard elements required). The “Special Judging notes” included at the
bottom of each routine-page are specific for that routine. In case of doubt, the rules of the latest FIG/ RSA Code of Points apply and, where
applicable, the benefit of the doubt is given to the gymnast.
Level 8 Gymnasts may only perform elements for value from the specific Table of elements included in this
manual under the L8 section. Level 9 Gymnasts may only perform elements from the FIG Code of Points for
value.
ALL Level 8 & Level 9 gymnasts (and/or their coaches) are required to have a written summary of their routines
present at all competitions. NO Appeals against D-scores will be allowed without a written summary of
the gymnast’s routines presented to the Head Judge. Summary templates are included in this manual for
easy completion by coaches (see appendix).
A small circle under a picture indicates that the element must be held for 2 seconds.
The Level in which a gymnast is entered remains entirely at the discretion of the gymnast’s coach, regardless of the gymnast’s
score or Level at previous competitions. However, a gymnast may only participate at the Zone Festival, Gym Games or National
Championships in the Level for which he qualified at a qualifying competition.

GENERAL:
All-around competition: Gymnasts must participate in all six apparatus (Floor, Pommel horse, Rings, Vault, Parallel bars & Horizontal bar).
Specialists: Minimum 3 apparatus.
ALL Level 8 gymnasts (and/or their coaches) are required to have a written summary of their routines present at all competitions. NO Appeals against D-
scores will be allowed without a written summary of the gymnast’s routines presented to the Head Judge. Summary templates are included in this manual for
easy completion by coaches (see appendix).
ROUTINE REQUIREMENTS:
Any 6 elements (5 + dismount) count for value.
An element may be repeated 1x for value on Pommel horse, Rings, Parallel bars and Horizontal bar.
A maximum of 3 elements per structure group is allowed. A minimum of 3 structure groups must be presented in the routine.
Short routines will incur a 1.00 mark penalty per element missing.
Elements are valued at 0.75 per element.
Bonus elements are valued at 0.50 per element AND MUST BE ADDED TO THE ROUTINE (implicating that a routine with a bonus element will have 7
elements in total). Only 1x Bonus element per routine is allowed. If a gymnast performs more than 1 bonus element, only the first performed Bonus element
will count for Bonus value (+0.5) and the rest will count as normal valued elements (0.75).
EXAMPLE of routine without bonus: Difficulty value – 6x 0.75 = 4.50
