Part 1 (3-4 minutes) assesses grammar. The candidate should demonstrate a high degree of grammatical accuracy and ability to use a wide range of grammatical structures and cohesive devices. Part 2 (3-4 minutes) assesses speaking. The candidate should be able to understand questions, ask and respond to questions on abstract topics, and produce extended stretches of language with little support. Part 3 (4-5 minutes) further assesses speaking abilities, including initiating and maintaining a conversation, relating contributions to their partner, and negotiating towards an outcome. Vocabulary use is also assessed.
