Script Ted Talk

The document discusses the roles of technology in teaching and learning. It describes how technology can serve as a tutor, teaching tool, and learning tool. As a tutor, technology can pass on knowledge to both teachers and learners. As a teaching tool, technology supports but does not replace teachers. As a learning tool, technology makes learning easier and more effective. The document then provides examples of how technology benefits both teachers and teaching as well as learners and learning, such as by modernizing classrooms, improving the teaching-learning process, supporting professional development, and enhancing communication skills.

Who among you are not surrounded by technology these days?

We are all accompanied by technology, even in our homes,

schools, and bedrooms, right? Technology is all around us.
ROLES OF TECHNOLOGY FOR TEACHING AND
LEARNING
Have you all heard Educational technology? Does this ring any
bell?
Educational technology started in mid-1600’s, the modern
library and the pencil were introduced, making the first
examples of educational technology while computers were first
used in1960’s in a way that was intended to individualize
instruction.
As teaching and learning go together, what would be the
roles of technology for teachers and teaching and of learners and
learning.
According to Stotic (2015), educational technology has three
domains:
 Technology as a tutor
 Technology as a teaching tool
 Technology as a learning tool

 Technology as a tutor
-as for Technology as a tutor, the technology itself can
support the teacher to teach another person. It means the
knowledge on technology will be passed on, it may be the
teacher or the learner that can acquire the knowledge.
 Technology as a teaching tool
-while the Technology as a teaching tool, technology is a
teaching tool, but can never replace a teacher. It will only
lighten the work of a teacher and can develop tools that can
be applied in a classroom.
 Technology as a learning tool
- As a learning tool, it makes learning easy and effective. It
can produce learning outcomes that call for technology-
assisted teaching. As a learning tool, it is very interesting
that even the elderly use the tool for learning for life.

There are numerous roles that technology plays in the job

of teachers. As a tool, technology has opened wider
avenues in management of resources and management of
learning. Likewise, it has modernized the teaching-learning
environment in schools. Here are some examples of the
myriad of roles that technology can do for teachers and
teaching.

1. Technology provides enormous support to the teacher as

the facilitator in learning.
- It turns a sedentary classroom into one that is lively and
engaging, with the use of e-learning, smart classrooms,
charts, and models classrooms that encourage learning
and boost students' attention spans.
2. Technology has modernized the teaching-learning
environment.
- The teachers are supported and supplemented with daily
activity-specific instructional materials that are
appropriately structured. There are many different
technology-driven resources that are readily available and
that can be used for remedial instruction or activities. The
same is true for many technological resources that can be
used for enrichment.
3. Technology improves teaching-learning process and ways
of teaching.
- This will improve the effectiveness and efficiency of
teaching. Technology can be used in a variety of teaching
methods and approaches that have been found to work
with different learning styles. This suggests that there
must be a variety of teaching methods just as there are a
variety of learning methods. Technology can support all
learning modalities, making instruction more effective and
efficient.
4. Technology opens new fields in educational researches.
- Technologies for teaching and learning improve the areas
of instruction, testing, and evaluation. Programs are
available that can quickly and accurately analyze and
interpret results. Due to the prevalence of digital research
materials, reference retrieval is also sped up. Access to big
data that can be processed for problem-solving and
research has also been made possible by technology.
5. Technology adds to the competence of teachers and
inculcates scientific outlook.
- By utilizing theories of intelligence and learning, which
are outlined in references posted online, and teachers are
urged to learn how to quickly and accurately source this
information.
6. Technology supports teacher professional development.
- The availability of technology offers an alternative
method of attending professional development online in
response to the demand for ongoing teacher professional
development. With the aid of technology tools, those who
are involved in providing continuing professional
development, such as trainers, facilitators, or organizers,
can improve or level up their delivery methods.

And that was for For Teachers and Teaching, now let’s
proceed to For Learners and Learning…

Support learners to learn how to learn on their own

way. All teachers fully understand that subject matter
or content is a means to achieve the learning outcomes.

There are three categories of knowledge according to

Egbert (2009): declarative knowledge, Structural
knowledge, and procedural knowledge.

Declarative knowledge consists of the discrete pieces of

information that answers the questions what, who, when,
and where. It is often learned through memorization of
facts, drills, and practice.
Structural knowledge consists of facts or pieces of
declarative knowledge put together to attain some form of
meaning.
Procedural knowledge is knowledge in action or the
knowledge of how to do something. It is based on facts
but learned through the process of procedural knowledge.

The traditional sources of knowledge are printed books,

modules and journals. Other sources are primary sources
such as information taken from research. However,
knowledge or content can be learned in many ways.

But how can technology support the learning of

declarative, structural or procedural knowledge? To teach
content, time is always an issue of teachers. Oftentimes,
we hear teachers say: “Too many things to teach, too little
time to do.” Technology maybe the answer, however the
challenge is for teachers to use technology to learn the
technology first. As a facilitator of learning, the teacher
can guide the students to look for the resources and to
utilized them appropriately.

There are varied programs that can be used by students off-line

or on-line for students. What should be necessary is that the
students are engaged, the task should focus on questions like
how, why and which in addition to who, what, when and where.
1. Technology enhances learners’ communication skills
through social interaction.
- This is frequently referred to as the information
transmission. as a single, individual, or group of
individuals, from one person to another.

According to Shirly (2003) in Egbert (2009), there are

three basic communication patterns:
a. Pont to point two-way or one-to-one like Internet
chat.
b. One-to-many outbound like a lecture.
c. Many-to-many like group discussion.

I'll hand the floor over to Ms. Gimongala, our upcoming

speaker, to discuss more details regarding the USE OF
TECHNOLOGY IN TEACHING AND LEARNING.
