Truth
“To be persuasive, we must be believable; to be believable we must be credible;

to be credible we must be truthful.” If we want to convince the masses about something we want
to convey to them, we need to be confident and credible so that the message we were about to
convey will be believable. But the problem is that journalists nowadays have been receiving
threats because of the articles they are publishing. Marcelo H. Del Pilar, an illustrado during the
Spanish era and Percy Lapid, a Filipino journalist and radio broadcaster in today’s time. These
two writers are trying to tell the world about wrong doings of every official running the
government to open the eyes of every Filipino.

Marcelo Hilario del Pilar y Gatmaitán is known for being a writer, lawyer, journalist, and
freemason. He is also known by his pen name Plaridel. He joined Jose Rizal along with other
illustrado in the reform movement in Spain. While studying at the University of Santo Tomas he
had been suspended and jailed after a fight with the priest about excessive baptismal fees. When
he quickly discovers that the Filipino people were being mistreated by the priest and officials. He
was provoked by the priest's actions and maltreatment, and he revealed their unfairness and
injustice to the Filipino people. Del Pilar worked for the first bilingual newspaper, "Dyaryong
Tagalog," as it was known. The Dyaryong Tagalog was utilized as a tool to expose the
mistreatment and atrocities perpetrated by the Spanish to bring about much-needed changes, as
well as to strengthen Filipino nationalism. But later, he catches tuberculosis in Barcelona and
died in a public hospital. On November 30, 1997, the president during that time Fidel V. Ramos
recommended Del Pilar to be a national hero.

Percival Carag Mabasa or known as Percy Lapid. He was a Filipino journalist and radio
broadcaster columnist at JSY publications. According to the Philippine-based National Union of
Journalists. Percival was the second reporter assassinated in the country since President Marcos
took power in June 2022. His radio program called “Lapid Fire.” that he hosts broadcast the
government officials that take advantage of their power. However, his career as a broadcaster
had been difficult because of the threats he received from the powerful people his accusing of.
One of these is related to the reading material that was given to us and it stated that government
officials in our country is living like a royalty given to their position in the government.

We all know Marcelo H. Del Pilar was an illustrado. Their revolution had been the eye
opening of the Filipinos to know that the Spaniards are maltreating us. Mabasa's commitment in
calling out injustice never wavered during his career, but it came at a cost. Both just want the
truth to be known by the public. That there are a lot of maltreats happening in our country now
and during the Spanish colonization. Marcelo’s upbringing of the excessive fees during his time
got him suspended and jailed. While Mabasa’s upbring as reported by Roy “Over the course of

35 years, he was fired approximately 100 times by radio stations due to his type of
commentary."

According to Blackburn (2009) Truth focuses on belief; fallacy is a fault. Truth is a
property of a sentence, thoughts, proposition that are uttered, and to rely on facts or to state what
is the case. Truth is necessary. We need the truth about the world so that we can thrive in it.
Telling lies may result in legal and societal consequences.

As for the reason, the masses have a tough time appreciating the upbringing of the truths
is because government officials take advantage of the power they had and make the people who
support them turn against them. For Mariano, it was Dyaryong Tagalog, for Mabasa, it was his
radio program Lapid Fire.

Therefore, I conclude that these two people did their best to disclose the truth to the
people but there are challenges that make their work more difficult. The upbringing of truth
opens the eyes of every Filipino but by considering the toxic system that we have in the present
time it makes the Filipino hesitate to fight against the government who took advantage of their
power.
