Do you ever think of why it is important to be a
good online citizen? Well I have. Good morning
Respected Judges, Principal, Teachers and fellow students, My name is Samreet Brar and I’m from 6A. Today I will be talking about “Why is it important to be a good online citizen?” I will also be talking about how you can stay safe on the internet. Well, we all know that the internet is a very dangerous place for everyone. We might not take the internet very seriously, but everyone has access to it including dangerous people wanting personal information.
To begin with, to be a good online citizen,
don't cyberbully people! It is completely wrong to bully people online. We all have feelings and we all should treat each other how we want to be treated. We all may think we are hidden online with our profile, but the police can track you! When cyberbullying turns very intense, the victim may commit suicide. Did you know that 7% of adult users in Canada have been cyberbullied. Everyone should stand up to bullying and stand up to it.
Everyone should know that the internet is
accessible to everyone! There are lots of people that are younger than 13, and have access to social media. In my opinion, children under 13 should be supervised online by their parents. The internet is not a safe place. There can and will be dangerous online predators wanting your personal information. These people have nothing else better to do other than wanting for personal information!
Younger children can learn very bad language
and spread it on. The internet is a hotspot for inappropriate language and behavior. To be a good online citizen, tell them to stop! Social media is made for appropriate behavior. Cyberbullying comes in with bad language. If this gets intense, please tell an adult. Bad language can be hurtful especially if the words are related to race, religion, culture and gender. To be a good online citizen, report and stop them! It’s true the internet can be a very scary place. To be safe on the internet, NEVER share personal information for example: Age, Country, Name and lots of other information. We should never accept friend requests or direct messages from people that we don’t know. If we accept these, they want personal information. Also, only add people you know in real life and not online! Also never press a link that someone sends you online, if you do, it may download a virus in your device and steal information!
All of this sounds scary and alarming, but it’s
true! We all know social media is also very dangerous! To be a good online citizen and you are younger than 13 years old, you shouldn’t be using social media unless you have permissions and are supervised. After all, social media is not safe for young kids. Some apps have 14 or 16+ apps which is understandable. Some apps are not made for kids as there can be attackers wanting information and kids won’t know about them. Well now we know how we can be a good online citizen, let's talk about how to be safe online. On social media, don’t talk to people you don’t know. Also never share personal information! There are always scam websites, Avoid them and never enter your credit card numbers, passwords and name. Also never download apps that seem suspicious, as they can steal personal information. In my opinion, if you are very overprotective, I wouldn’t use social media and don’t shop online. To be a good online citizen, make your social media accounts private, download apps carefully and use secure online shopping websites.
Furthermore, let's talk about how the police can
track you online. The police can go to your internet service provider and request connection and see your usage logs. The police do this when you have been doing bad things online. To be safe, do not interact with people who say bad things online, also ignore them. If someone sends something inappropriate to someone, they can get in trouble!
Now that we know who can see us online lets
see what types of people can we see on the internet. There can be hackers! On some online platforms, there can be hackers disguised as normal people wanting your information. To stay safe and be a good online citizen, do not talk to these people and block them. Do not make online friends, you never know who they are in real life. What if they are also disguised as someone and wanting your information! After all, that was a lot of information! In conclusion, the internet is not what we think it is. I hope you have learned how to be a good online citizen and stay safe! I hope you will keep your information safe and not talk to strangers. Don’t let the internet sabotage your life. Thank you so much for listening to my speech.
