As a creative professional with a passion for inventiveness, beauty and appeal, I am thrilled to apply for
the MA in Graphics Design program at University of Derby. With a Second-class upper division honours
in Fine and Applied Arts from Lagos State University, Nigeria, I am confident that the program perfectly
aligns with my personal interests and will help me to achieve my career aspirations.
During my undergraduate studies, I had the opportunity to work on a project aimed at revamping my
institution's computer graphics studio. This experience allowed me to improve my skills in design, project
management, and team collaboration. As a result, I was able to successfully enhance the studio's standard
and user-friendliness, thereby improving academic learning.
My passion for visual aesthetics and graphical illustrations has been a driving force in my academic and
professional pursuits. I have a critical understanding of the role that design plays in creating brand
experiences that resonate with audiences. As such, I am particularly interested in the areas of branding
and visual identity, as they allow me to explore my creative ingenuity to deliver meaningful and impactful
designs. I am proficient in various design software, including Adobe Photoshop, CorelDraw Suites,
Adobe Premiere Pro, and Adobe Illustrator. I constantly seek to improve my skills in these areas and stay
up-to-date with industry trends.
Aside from my academic achievements, my experience working in different creative organizations has
given me a valuable perspective on the industry, and I am excited to build upon this knowledge and
expand my skillset. In my professional roles, I have been responsible for designing brand and marketing
materials, from concept to completion, with strict adherence to stipulated brand guidelines. In addition to
my technical skills, I have also developed strong leadership and communication skills through my
experience serving as the Vice President of the Association of Fine and Applied Arts and as a member of
the Student Representative Council in my institution. These skills, combined with my deep-seated interest
in graphics design, make me a strong candidate for the MA in Graphics Design program at University of
Derby.
What I will bring to the program is a passion for creativity and a desire to learn from experienced faculty
and fellow students. I am a hardworking and dedicated individual who is always eager to learn new things
and take on new challenges. I believe that my leadership skills and experience working in the industry
will also be an asset to the program.
Looking ahead, my goal is to establish a creative institute that helps major local and international brands
and individuals bring their creative ideas to life. The MA in Graphics Design program at University of
Derby will provide me with the necessary tools and knowledge to achieve this goal. The program's focus
on creative thinking, user experience design, and research-based methodologies aligns with my career
aspirations, and will enable me to develop innovative and provoking design solutions.
Additionally, the realization that the learning environment at University of Derby is compactly designed
to enhance interpersonal relationships and active student participation is of great appeal to me as it would
provide an immersive opportunity to acquire and provide invaluable input.
I am indeed drawn to the program's emphasis on practical learning, exposure to industry professionals, the
opportunity to work on live projects as well as the wide array of graphic design possibilities including
typography, photography, art direction, animation and particularly interactive design, an area where I
would like to deepen my knowledge. I am especially fascinated about the prospect of learning under the
tutelage of Prof. Jay Taylor, a Course Director and Assistant Professor in Fine Art and Illustration. His
international repute as a seasoned illustrator in advertising, publishing and new media industries is of
great interest to me and I am certain of benefiting exponentially from his close guidance.
In conclusion, I am convinced that my academic background, practical experience, and passion for
graphic design make me an ideal candidate for this program. I am confident that I will thrive in the
challenging and intellectually stimulating environment at University of Derby and that I will make
valuable contributions to the program, learning from experienced faculty and collaborating with fellow
students to produce innovative and visually compelling design work that will make a positive impact in
the industry. Thank you for considering my application.
