1. Discussion
SOCIOLOGY OF EDUCATION
The sociology of education is the
study of how social institutions and (The students are listening attentively to
individual experiences affects education and the teacher)
its outcome. It is relatively a new branch
and two great sociologist Émile Durkheim
and Max Weber were the father of
sociology of education. Émile Durkheim's
work on moral education as a basis for
social solidarity is considered the beginning
of sociology of education.

Anyone in this class can give me

their understanding of the word Sociology? (Students raising their hands)
Answers may vary

Very good! You've mentioned about the

word society, what is society?
(Answers may vary)

How will the people become organized in a

society?
(Answers may vary)
They will respect each others opinion by
letting them express their thoughts and
feelings on certain things

Very good! Respect is one of the most

important aspect that each one of us needs.
So here, we are always talking about
eucation, can you tell me what education is?
(Answers may vary)
Another idea?
.
(Answers may vary)
Very good! Education is covers both the
teaching, learning of knowledge and values.
 Education consists of systematic
instruction, teaching and training by
professional teachers.

Consensus and Conflict Theory

Consensus Theory
 Consensus is a general or widespread
agreement among all members of a
particular society.

Why is consensus important in the

society?

Excellent! (Students raising their hands)

It is being considered in these theories Answers may vary
that the social order in society should be
maintained, based upon the accepted
norms, values, roles or regulations that
are accepted by the society in general.

What can you say about the word conflict?

Good! You have a point. Conflict means

misunderstanding and getting into war
(Answers may vary)
Conflict Theory
 Conflict is a clash between ideas and
principles and people.

What does conflict do to have a social

order?

According to conflict theory, inequality

exists because those in control of a
disproportionate share of society’s resources (Answers may vary)
actively defend their advantages.

 What is the impact of conflict theory

in the Philippine education system?

Very good! So the powerful members-best

positions and the less powerful groups
(minority, ethnic, racial, women) - lowest
rank (Answers may vary)
 What is the role of education in
assuming the conflict theory?
Education plays in maintaining the prestige,
power, and economic and social position of
the dominant group in society.

 How do people or an organization

(Answers may vary)
settle a conflict?

Conflict theory assumes that social behavior

is best understood in terms of conflict or
tensions between competing group.
(Answers may vary)

(Answers may vary)

Great! That is the one of many ways to
solve conflict without hurting each other. I
guess you really understood the topic. Let's
continue

Structural Functionalism
Structural Functionalism is a macro
theory that looks at how all structures or
institutions in society work together.

From the given meaning can you provide

example?
(The students are still listening to the
Society is seen as an integrated whole,
teacher)
where all parts are interconnected.

How will the society work? (Answers may vary)

Excellent!

This theory focuses on the roles people

perform and the idea that behaviour follows
established norms, which helps to maintain (Answers may vary)
social order.

Institutions and people are interconnected;

when something shifts, either in the
institutions or in the people, the other has to
change or compensate to restore the
equilibrium.

How does the functionalists think of the

society?

Parsons’ structural functionalism has four

functional imperatives also known as AGIL
scheme. (Answers may vary)

1. Adaptation – a system must cope

with external situational exigencies.

2. Goal attainment- a system must

define and achieve its primary goals. (Answers may vary)
3. Integration- a system must regulate
the interrelationship of its component parts.
4, Latency (pattern maintenance)- a
system must furnish, maintain and
renew both the motivation of
individuals and the cultural patterns (Answers may vary)
that create and sustain the motivation.

(The student will read the paragraph)

From the diagram given, can you give

your thoughts and ideas to this one?

Thats right! Social systems must be

designed to work in harmony with other
systems. The social system needs support (Answers may vary)
from other systems in order to survive. The
system must provide for a sizable amount of
its actors' requirements.

Functional Requisites of a social

system
1. Social system must be structured so
that they operate compatibly with other
systems.
2. To survive, the social system must
have requisite from other systems.
3. The system must meet a significant
proportion of the needs of its actors.

4. The system must elicit adequate

participation from its members.
5. It must have at least a minimum of
control over potentially disruptive behavior.
6. If conflict becomes sufficiently
disruptive, it must be controlled.
7. Finally, a social system requires a
language in order to survive.
-Talcott Parsons

 How do structural functionalist view

education?

INTERACTIONIST THEORIES
In general, interactionist theories about
the relation of school and society are
critiques and extension of the (Answers may vary)
functionalist and conflict perspective.

Do you have any idea about this theory?

 While this level of analysis helps us

to understand education in the “big
picture” , macro-sociological
theories hardly provide us with an (Answers may vary)
interpretable snap-shot of what
schools are like on an everyday
level. WHAT DO STUDENTS
AND TEACHERS ACTUALLY
DO IN SCHOOL?

What do interactionist actually do?

Very good! It is exactly what most

people do not question that is most
problematic to the interactionist.

Can you provide and example for

this? (Answers may vary)

Yes! That is right. Individual is related to

society through on going social interactions.
(Answers may vary)

- views the self as socially constructed in

relation to social forces and structures and
the product of on going negotiations of
meanings. Thus the social self is an active
product of human agency rather than a (Answers may vary)
deterministic product of social structure.

What should the actors do in interactionism?

That's correct! Interactionist are, of course,

interested not simply in socialization but
also interaction in general which of “vital
importance in its own rights.” -interaction is
the process which the ability to think is both (Answers my vary)
developed and expressed.

That ends our discussion, do you have any

question?

2. Application

In a given group you are tasked to perform

a role-play presentation about how these
social dimensions are used in the classroom.
Follow the rubrics below.

Group 2 and Group 3

dimensions in the school and in the
community.

You may use any types of concept map

below.

The students will do the activity given)

You are only given 5 minutes to complete it

and I will randomly call groups to present
their outputs in the front.
