Activity No. 2.2 – Direct and Inverse Variations

A. Write an equation for the following statements and identify what type of variation does it
belong.
1. a varies directly as b.
2. a is directly proportional to the square root of c.
3. b varies inversely with the square of c.
4. The length l of a rectangular garden varies inversely as its width w.
5. The cost of a jeepney fare F varies directly as the distance d travelled.
B. Solve the following problems.
1. Find the constant of variation (k) if j varies directly as a when j = 17 if a = 8.
2. The time (t) it takes to plant rice in an acre varies inversely as the number of farm workers
(w). If 18 workers can plant rice in a certain number of acres in 3 days, how long will it take
12 workers to plant rice in the same number of acres?

Activity No. 2.3 – Joint and Combined Variations

A. Write an equation for the following statements and identify what type of variation does it
belong.
1. Z varies directly as y
2. The amount that a family (f) gives to a charity varies directly as its income (i)
3. U varies directly as c and inversely as d
4. r varies jointly as q and the square of s
5. The volume of a gas V varies directly as the temperature t and inversely as the pressure p.
B. Solve the following problems.
1. a varies directly as b and inversely as c. If a = 15 when b = 20 and c = 40, find a when b = 12
and c = 20.
2. Z varies jointly as j and a. If j = 3, a = 5, and z = 30, what is z when j = 10 and a = 12.
