EL – 456 Fiber Optic Communication

Credits: 4 Updated on 19. 07. 2010

Course Objectives
To provide students with the design and operating principles of modern optical communication systems and
networks. Upon completion of the subject, students should be familiar with commonly used components and
subsystems in optical communication and network systems.
Course Outcomes
After completing this course the students should be able to:
1. Learn the basic elements of optical fiber transmission link, fiber modes configurations and structures.
2. Understand the different kind of losses, signal distortion in optical wave guides and other signal degradation
factors.
3. Learn different types of modulation and demodulation techniques used in optical fiber communication.
4. Learn the fiber optical network components, variety of networking aspects, SONET/SDH and operational
principles WDM.
