CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the procedure and methodology in the actual conduct of

the study. It also includes the description of the instruments used to determine the mean

and the significant relationship of working while studying and the academic performance

of Grade-12 working students.

A. RESEARCH DESIGN

The researchers employed a descriptive-correlational research design. This

study is designed to depict the participants in an accurate way. More simply,

descriptive-correlational research is about describing people who take part in the study

and the relationship of the independent variable with the dependent variable. The

researchers described the academic performance of Grade 12 working students, thus

the relationship between. .

B. PARTICIPANTS

The researchers employed purposive sampling technique in gathering the

respondent and choose twenty-five (25) working students of Grade-12 in San Mariano

National High School as the respondents of the study for the school year 2022-2023.

Table 1. Participants, Sample Population Size

PARTCIPANTS FREQUENCY PERCENTAGE

TVL- EIM 10 29.41%

TVL- SMAW 9 34.61%

TVL-HE 1 5.56%

HUMSS 4 4.08%

ABM 1 2.63%

TOTAL 25 11.68%

C. RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researchers will gather the data through researcher-made questionnaires.

Polit and Hungler (1997:466) define a questionnaire as “a method of gathering

information from respondents about attitudes, knowledge, beliefs and feelings”. The

questionnaire was designed to gather information about the factors such as economic

status, self-sufficiency or independence, and peer influence, in which influence students

to work while studying.

The gathered data will be quantified, organized, tallied, tabulated and subjected

to statistical treatment, to elicit facts and decipher the necessary findings to validate the

results of the research. The researchers utilized Microsoft Excel which accurately drew

out the numerical values for quantitative inspection.

D. DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

In this study, questionnaires will be used to obtain data relevant to the study’s

objectives and research questions. The purpose of the study was to identify the factors

affecting student employment. The researcher will approach every Grade-12 working

students in San Mariano National High School and hand them the questionnaire.
The researchers will also gather the data from the performance of the working

students of Grade 12 in San Mariano National High School through their written outputs,

performance tasks, and quarterly assessments. Twenty-five (25) students serves as the

respondents of this study. When needed data are gathered, it will be followed by the

collection and tabulation of the raw data. Microsoft Excel will also be used in data

processing to reduce the work and avoid inaccuracy of results. Statistical Treatment of

data will be presented in tables and graphs, and will be followed by the analysis and

interpretations to draw the research findings, conclusions and recommendations.

E. VALIDATION OF RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The research adviser validates the questionnaire and examines it to see if it

would function as intended and yield the data required for the study before drafting the

final questionnaire.

The researcher-made questionnaire is as follows;

F. TREATMENT OF DATA

The statistical treatment used was enumerated as follows:

Mean. Use to calculate the answers of the respondents in the questionnaire about the

factors that influence students to work while studying. This will answer the statement of

the problem 1 which describes the mean factors affecting student employment based on

the data gathered.

Use to calculate the academic performance of Grade-12 Working students. This

will answer the statement of the problem 2 which describes the mean academic

performance of the respondents based on the gathered data.

The formula is shown below:

Σx
x=
N

Where:

x = Arithmetic mean

∑x = Sum of all the grades/answers

N = Number of samples

The numerical values were interpreted based on the scales as follows.

90-100 OUTSTANDING

85-89 VERY SATISFACTORY

80-84 SATISFACTORY

75-79 FAIRLY SATISFACTORY

Pearson R. Use to measure the value of correlation coefficient between student

employment and the academic performance of Grade-12 working students. This will

answer the statement of the problem 3 which describes the significant relationship

between the two variables based on the gathered data.

The formula is shown below:

Where:

r = Pearson Coefficient

n = Number of pairs of scores

∑ xy = Sum of the products of paired scores

∑x = Sum of the x scores

∑y = Sum of the y scores

∑x = Sum of the squared x scores

∑y = Sum of the squared y score
The numerical values were interpreted based on the scales as follows.

0.70 to 0.90 (-0.70 to -0.90) HIGH POSITIVE (NEGATIVE) CORRELATION

0.50 to 0.70 (-0.50 to -0.70) MODERATE POSITIVE (NEGATIVE)

CORRELATION

0.30 to 0.50 (-0.30 to -0.50) LOW POSITIVE (NEGATIVE) CORRELATION

0.00 to 0.30 (0.00 to -0.30) NEGLIGIBLE CORRELATION
