Personal Statement

I am Mahfuja Akter Mitu. I am a self-confident and motivated student who works day and night
to gain knowledge. As a student from a developing nation, I have always wished to study at a
world-class university. After completing my bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a brilliant
result of 3.18 out of 4.00, I have decided to broaden my mathematical knowledge to the industrial
level. And that made me think of doing a hybrid degree in my master’s where I can utilize my
knowledge and skills but learn more practical parts to engage with the industry.

So, I have decided to study MSc, International Banking and Finance. There are some vital
reasons behind choosing the course as my Master’s interest. Firstly, choosing Banking and
Finance as a career path means I will have the skills to work in a profession that is constantly in
high demand in every country, every industry, and sector. Companies from all industries require
finance professionals to manage their financial responsibilities. A finance manager can
contribute a lot to the company’s profit. So, it is not a matter of salary only, it is a matter of bringing
value to the company I will work for. In this competitive world, we always think of job security.
But the high and never-ending demand for banking and finance graduates will provide me with
job assurance. Another key factor is, Banking and Finance degree will give me several
transferable skills – communication skills, research skills, writing skills, presenting skills- that will
help me to enhance my CV and make me a desirable employee to a range of employers. It is not
only theoretical but also practical and technical. I can develop strong numerical and quantitative
skills, with advanced analytical and problem-solving capabilities. I could pursue a career as
Banker, stockbroker, financial analyst or I could head in a completely different direction and use
what I have learned from my degree to become a business development manager, data analyst, or
mortgage advisor.

As a student from a developing nation, I have always dreamt of studying in one of the developed
countries. I found that the United Kingdom would be the best choice for me. The United Kingdom
stands out to me, firstly for its quality education, secondly, it has innovative and unique teaching
methods. Furthermore, the UK has all the modern amenities in institutions as well as the worldwide
recognition of degrees. It's an open secret that the UK has a long history of education. There are
thousands of international students studying in the UK and this diversity of various cultures will
enlarge my knowledge and I will gain a wide range of experiences. The most beneficial part of
studying in the UK is I can complete my course one year earlier compared to other countries'
universities which will save my money and time together.

After choosing this course, I did some research that which university will provide me with the right
learning environment according to my needs. Then I found University of Greenwich, which is
situated in the London. University of Greenwich is the most suitable one for my profile.
Additionally, my general inquiries made through my close friends firmed up my decision to
apply to Greenwich University. The indigenous community is a big part of the university culture,
and many of the activities the University conducted caught my interest as it offers an ample
number of opportunities for an international student to merge into the local community. Apart
from this, I was also pleased to know that the university has small class sizes that will make the
learning experience something worth considering especially when you are seeking this
opportunity to get expert guidance and improve yourself. I was also attracted to the fact that the
university can connect with each and every student and they are successful in making a
difference in many lives. So, if I can complete my bachelor’s degree from such a prominent
university, it will be extremely beneficial for me as it will give me numerous opportunities to
develop in my career.

My goal is to attain a better understanding of future changes and difficulties of finance that may
face by the world, as well as to develop the thinking and skills that the degree will provide. I want
to be a Finance analyst and I think University of Greenwich will facilitate my way of learning
necessary skills.
