Assignment 4 PDF

1. A one-way repeated measures ANOVA was conducted to examine the effects of 4 different drugs on minutes snoring per night in 8 patients. There was a significant effect of drug, with drugs 2 and 3 resulting in less snoring than drugs 1 and 4. 2. A 4 x 2 mixed design ANOVA examined the effects of the 4 drugs and sex on snoring. The main effect of drug was significant but there was no significant interaction between drug and sex or main effect of sex. 3. A one-way between-subjects ANCOVA examined the effects of group therapy vs one-on-one sessions on depression 3 months later, controlling for earlier depression scores. Depression 3 months later was related to

Assignment # 4

All exercises should be answered in narrative form with the SPSS output attached.
Remember to include means and standard deviations for all variables
whether or not they are included in the example that you are using, as well as
effect size for any significant variables

1. Using the repeated measures data set, examine whether there were any
differences in patient response (number of minutes snoring per night) among
8 patients given 4 different drugs in random order for 1 week.

a. A one-way repeated measures ANOVA was performed to compare the

effects of four different drugs on the number of minutes snoring per night
in eight participants. Based on Mauchly’s Test of Sphericity, sphericity
2
was not violated ( χ (5) = 2.454, p = .786). Using uncorrected results, a
significant difference between the number of minutes snoring after each
drug trial was found (F (3, 21) = 30.329, p < .001). Bonferroni’s pairwise
comparisons revealed statistically significant differences between the
effects of each drug on the length of snoring at night. Drugs 2 (M = 74.5,
sd = 4.036) and 3 (M = 77, sd = 2.976) lead to significantly less time
snoring at night compared to drugs 1 (M = 85.83, sd = 4.207) and 4 (M =
93.75, sd = 5.548). However, there was no significant difference between
the effects of drug 1 and the effects of drug 4, as well as between the
effects of drug 2 and the effects of drug 3. This analysis had a large effect
2
size ( η p = .812).

2. Using the same data set, examine whether there were any differences in
patient response (number of minutes snoring per night) among 8 patients
given 4 different drugs in random order for 1 week for males and females.

a. A 4 x 2 Mixed Design ANOVA was calculated to examine the effects of

each of the four different drugs and the sex of each participant on the
number of minutes spent snoring per night. Based on Mauchly’s Test of
2
Sphericity, sphericity was not violated ( χ (5) = 1.604, p = .903). The drug
x sex interaction (F (3, 18) = 1.07, p = .386) and the main effect for sex (F
(1, 6) = 3.07, p = .13) were not significant, but the main effect for the drug
(F (3, 18) = 30.543, p < .001) was found to be statistically significant.
Snoring was influenced by the drug given, but not by the participants’ sex.
Drug 1 was not significant between the female participants (M = 86.75, sd
= 4.787) and the male participants (M = 84. 5, sd = 3.873). Drug 2 was not
significant between the female participants (M = 73.5, sd = 4.203) and the
male participants (M = 75.5, sd = 4.203). Drug 3 was not significant
between the female participants (M = 77.75, sd = 4.272) and the male
participants (M = 76.25, sd = .952). Lastly, drug 4 was not significant
between the female participants (M = 96.75, sd = 6.62) and the male
participants (M = 90.75, sd = 4.031). The effect size for the main effect of
2
the drug trials was large ( η p = .836), the effect size for the main effect of
2
sex was small to medium ( η p = .338), and the effect size for the
2
interaction was small η p = .151)

3. Using the experim data set, examine whether there were any differences in
depression (depress3) 3 months after an intervention (group) which consisted
of group therapy vs one-on-one sessions (I realize the group variable has
math skills and confidence building as its two levels. Just make believe that
they are for the levels I just wrote about. No harm, no foul) after controlling
for depression scores at an earlier time (depress2).

a. A one-way between-subjects ANCOVA was conducted to examine the

effect of either group therapy or one-on-one sessions on depression after 3
months, covarying out the effects from the depression score at an earlier
time. Depression 3 months after the intervention was significantly related
the response the second response regarding depression (F (1, 27) =
201.878, p < .001). The main effect for the type of class/group was not
significant (F (1, 27) = .437, p = .515). Neither the math skills class (M =
40.27, sd = 4.166) nor the confidence building class (M = 38.13, sd =
5.817) had a significant effect on the responses about depression 3 months
2
after the intervention. This analysis had a large effect size ( η p = .887).
