Read Chapter 2-Lesson 1 – Legislature and do the following:

I. Define the following vocabulary words and use it on a sentence:


1. Statues – written laws enacted by legislatures
Statutes affect people in many ways. They deal with issues such as environmental quality,

national defense, etc.
2. Ordinances – a county or city law
- Ordinances help local governments to maintain order and stability among citizens.
3. Cause- a particular and separate article, stipulation, or provision in a treaty, bill, or contract
- Clauses are commonly used in important documents such as contracts, deeds, and wills.
4. Supremacy – the state or condition of being superior to all others in authority, power, or status
- The Supremacy Clause is part of Article IV of the U.S. Constitution.
5. Bills – a draft of a proposed law being considered by a legislature; a written statement of money owed
A bill, if approved by a majority in the House of Commons, can become an Act of

6. Legislative intent – the ends sought to be achieved by a legislature in an enactment
- Legislative intent can be sought for guidance in the interpretation and application of the law.
7. Congress – the supreme legislative body of a nation and especially of a republic
- The Congress of the U.S. consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives.
