Assignment FVM2 - M3 PDF

This document describes a transient advection-diffusion problem to model mass transport along a channel. Students must: 1) Develop the algebraic formulation for either the explicit or implicit transient finite volume method. 2) Use their chosen method to calculate the scalar variable φ along the channel until it reaches steady state. They must use a grid with at least 10 cells and an appropriate time step. 3) Present their results with graphs showing the distribution of φ over time and its value at the end of the channel.

Assignment 2 for Module 3: The Finite Volume Method

Transient Advection-Diffusion Problem

Consider a quasi-one-dimensional transient advection-diffusion flow with the boundary

conditions as illustrated in Figure 1:

𝑢 (𝑥 ) 𝑚̇ = 𝜌𝑢𝐴 = 1 × 10!" kg/s 𝑢 (𝑥 )

𝑥 = 0 𝑥 = ℓ
𝜙=0 𝑑𝜙⁄𝑑𝑥 = 0
Figure 1

In Figure 1, the velocity 𝑢 is given in the form of constant mass flow rate, 𝑚̇ = 𝜌𝑢𝐴 =
1 × 10!" kg/s, with density 𝜌 = 1.0 kg/m# and 𝐴 = 1 × 10!" m$ is the cross-sectional area
at the entrance of the flow path. The cross-sectional area 𝐴 at the (𝑥$ , ℓ) range, 𝐴$ , is two times
bigger that the area at the (0, 𝑥% ) range, which is 𝐴% = 𝐴, with a linearly gradual change from
𝐴% to 𝐴$ in the (𝑥% , 𝑥$ ) range, i.e., 𝐴$ = 2𝐴% .

Other data and parameters include path length ℓ = (0.5 + 0.1𝑔) and diffusivity coefficient Γ =
0.05 kg/m∙s. Given that the source term 𝑆(𝑥) forms a linear relation with the 𝑥-coordinate as
shown in Figure 2, where 𝑆& = 10𝑓, 𝑥% = 0.6ℓ and 𝑥$ = 0.8ℓ.

By using a one-dimensional grid system containing at least 10 computational nodes or cells:

a) develop the algebraic formulation that can be used to compute the solution of 𝜙 along
the 𝑥-axis from the corresponding transport equation for the chosen transient method as
follows (choose one only): (8 marks)
(i) the transient explicit method;
(ii) the transient fully implicit method.
b) obtain the distribution of the value 𝜙 at transient condition using the appropriate
advection-diffusion scheme depending on the Peclet number and the chosen transient
method using an appropriate time step Δ𝑡 that can fulfil its stability condition if the
explicit method is chosen, or that can produce accurate results if the implicit method is
selected. The calculation should be performed until the solutions reach less than 5% of
the steady state solutions (refer to the previous assignment). (12 marks)

For variables 𝑓 and 𝑔, they are based on the last two digits of the student registration number,
i.e., P1234𝑓𝑔. If 𝑓 is zero, use 𝑓 = 10 instead.

Use appropriate graphs or charts to illustrate the distribution of 𝜙 along the 𝑥-axis at selected
times and the variation or progression of 𝜙ℓ at 𝑥 = ℓ with respect to time 𝑡. Similar to the
previous assignment, students are encouraged to present the answers for (a) and (b) using
appropriate office applications such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Equation to write the
answers for (a) and Microsoft Excel or any other numerical tools or spreadsheet applications
for (b).
