Surface Area and Volume of Solids PDF

1. The document provides formulas and examples for calculating the volume and surface area of geometric solids like cones, cylinders, and composite solids made of cones on cylinders. It includes word problems asking students to use the formulas to find volumes, surface areas, radii, and other values. 2. The document contains multiple practice problems for students to apply their understanding of volume and surface area formulas for cones, cylinders, and other solids. It provides step-by-step workings for sample problems to illustrate the use of the formulas. 3. The problems cover topics like finding the volume of a composite solid, surface area of a cone, circumference of a cone's base, and applying concepts like cutting con

Surface Area and Volume

CLASS IX

1 2
1 [Volume of a cone = 3πr h]

The solid above consists of a cone with base radius rcentimetres on top of a cylinder of radius
rcentimetres.
The height of the cylinder is twice the height of the cone.
The total height of the solid is Hcentimetres.
(a) Find an expression, in terms of π, r and H, for the volume of the solid. Give your answer innin
simplest form. [3]
(b) It is given that r = 10 and the height of the cone is 15 cm.
(i) Show that the slant height of the cone is 18.0 cm, correct to one decimal place.[2]
(ii) Find the circumference of the base of the cone. [2]

(iv) Hence, or otherwise, find the total surface area of the solid. [3]

2.A cylindrical candle has a height of 5 cm.Ais the centre of the top of the candle and
B is thecentre of the base of the candle. The wick runs from B through A and extends 12 mm

(a) How many of these candles can be made using a 2 m length of wick? [2]
(b) The wick is in the form of a solid cylinder.
The volume of the wick inside the candle from A to B is 0.2 cm3.
(i) Calculate the radius of the wick. Give your answer in millimetres. [3]
(a) One candle was made by pouring candle wax into a cylindrical mould so that it
surrounded the wick.Thismould has an internal radius of 1.9 cm.
Calculate the volume of candle wax required to make this candle [3]
How many of these candles can be made using 3 litres of candle wax? [2]
(c)

One of these candles is placed on a rectangular piece of wrapping paper.

The paper is wrapped around the candle so that it covers the outside and there is an extra 1 cm
for an overlap. What is the length, in centimetres, of paper required to wrap one candle? [2]
3. The figure shows a solid cone with C as the centre of its base. B is the vertex of the cone A is a
point On the circumference of its base. AC= 9cm and BC= 12cm.

a) Find
AB.
The total surface area of the cone
The volume of the cone.
b) The cone is cut parallel to to the base to obtain a small cone as shown in the diagram and
a frutum.
Y is the centre of the base of the small cone. X is the point on the circumference of this
base and on the line AB such that XY = 3 cm
Calculate
i. BY
ii. AX
iii. The circumference of the base of the small cone.
iv. The volume of the frustum.
