Genric Server Migration Plan

This document outlines the process for rehosting applications from an on-premises environment to AWS using Cloud Migration Factory and AWS Application Migration Service. It describes the key phases of planning, pre-discovery, build, test and cutover. The planning phase involves grooming the backlog and sprint planning. Pre-discovery includes confirming server lists, identifying dependencies, and creating firewall requests. The build phase replicates servers to each target environment. Testing launches instances to verify connectivity and application functionality. Cutover finally migrates production servers and shuts down on-premises systems.

Architecture

The following diagram illustrates rehosting (discovering and migrating servers from an on-
premises source environment to AWS) by using Cloud Migration Factory and AWS
Application Migration Service.
Planning phase
Task
Groom the pre-discovery backlog.
Conduct the sprint planning working session.

Pre-discovery phase
Task
Confirm server list.
Identify and add server groups.
Fill in the application discovery template.
Add missing server details (middleware and OS teams).
Get inbound/outbound traffic rules (network team).
Identify required tagging.
Create firewall request details.
Update the EC2 instance type.
Identify the current state diagram.
Finalize the future state diagram.
Create firewall or security group service requests.
Review firewall or security group requests (InfoSec team).
Implement firewall security group requests (network team).

Build phase (repeat for development/QA, pre-production,

and production environments)
Task
Import the application and server data.
Check prerequisites for source servers.
Create a service request to install replication agents.
Install the replication agents.
Push the post-launch scripts.
Verify the replication status.
Create the admin user.
Validate the launch template.

Test phase (repeat for development/QA, pre-production,

and production environments)

Task
Create a service request.
Configure a load balancer (optional).
Launch instances for testing.
Verify the target instance status.
Modify DNS entries.
Test connectivity to backend hosts from EC2 instances.
Update the DNS A record.
Update the DNS CNAME record.
Test the application in applicable environments.
Mark as ready for cutover.

Cutover phase
Task
Create production deployment plan.
Notify operations team of downtime.
Replicate production machines.
Shut down in-scope source servers.
Launch instances for cutover.
Retrieve target instance IPs.
Verify target server connections.
