About the Module
Today’s generation is surrounded by technology. Everywhere you look around and
whatever you do, it has always something to do with computers-even in creating
artworks. Many young artists nowadays have their masterpieces known which is
defined by technology. Are you familiar with these arts? Do you know how to make
an artwork using computer? Learn all of these by going through the module. This is
divided into two lessons, namely:
• Lesson 1 – Computer/Digital Arts
• Lesson 2 – Mobile Phone Art/Computer-Generated Images

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. identify art elements and principles in the technology-based production arts;
2. identify distinct characteristics of arts during the 21st century in terms of
production and functionality range of audience;
3. identify artworks produced by technology from other countries and their
adaptation by Philippine artists;
4. discuss the concept that technology is an effective and vibrant tool for
empowering a person to express his/her ideas, goals, and advocacies, which
elicits immediate action;
5. explain the role or function of artworks by evaluating their utilization and
combination of art elements and principles;
6. use artworks to derive the traditions/history of a community and;
7. compare the characteristics of artworks in the 21st century.

Second Quarter: Technology-Based Arts. Now, hold on tight and open your mind to
a whole new dimension of art.

Technology-based Art

As the term suggests, it is an art produced using technology. Computers are the
primary means to create and manipulate this kind of art. Today, computer artists
use various kinds of program to create or edit pictures, generate videos, produce
music, or even send consciousness to people on certain issues in the society thru
posters.

Computer/Digital Arts
A. Origin and Early Stages
Computer art or digital art first came on the scene in the early 1960s. This was
because the development of technology was already available at that time.
People, like engineers and scientists experimented with the use of computers
and they started to see that they can actually create art using mathematical
and scientific principles. Thus, the first computer arts were made using
geometric forms and repeating patterns. See the examples below of
internationally famous artworks which started digital arts.

B. Digital Arts Nowadays

Digital art is made or represented with digital

technology. This includes images done completely on
computer or hand-drawn images scanned into a
computer and finished using a software program like
Adobe Illustrator. Digital art can also involve animation
and 3D virtual sculpture renderings as well as projects
that combine several technologies. Some digital arts
involve manipulation of video images.
Nowadays, computer or digital arts has
invaded every aspect of modern human
life.

 From promotions of businesses to taking selfies at home,
some digital artists have used their works to express their
views on political, social, and cultural issues. It also
advocates the causes that are critical to modern life, such as
the environment and climate change.
Others even explore the relationship between science,
technology and the arts.

2 Mobile Phone Art

What I Need to Know

After the lesson, you are expected to:

1. show sample artworks created using mobile phones and;
2. create an artwork using one of the heroic acts done during this pandemic.

What’s In

Did you have fun creating a computer art with the previous lesson? At this point,
you will be focusing on creating an artwork using one gadget only and that is your
mobile phone or smartphone.

Observe the two images below. Which artwork is generated by mobile phone? Which
is painted by hand?

If your answer is the first one, then you are right! It is very clear that it is a picture
edited using an application in the smartphone. There is a blurry effect and a text
inserted as well. The second image is a real Northern Renaissance painting by Dutch
artist Johannes Vermeer entitled “Girl with a Pearl Earring”.

Mobile Phone Art

The smartphone indeed has changed from a simple communication tool into a
creative device that can generate different kinds of artworks for different kinds of
purposes. These can include your personal photos or videos that you edit using many
kinds of applications.

This is not new to you, right? Because nowadays, people are already very active in
social media and you can see various mobile phone arts from their posts.
