Class 8 - Maths - Understanding Quadrilaterals PDF

This document provides solutions to exercises from a chapter on understanding quadrilaterals from the NCERT Class 8 Math textbook. The first exercise involves classifying various figures as simple curves, simple closed curves, polygons, convex polygons, or concave polygons. The second exercise asks students to determine the number of diagonals in different shapes like quadrilaterals, hexagons, and triangles. The third exercise asks students to determine the sum of the interior angles of convex and concave quadrilaterals. The fourth exercise examines how the sum of interior angles is related to the number of sides in a convex polygon. Later exercises define regular polygons, ask students to find missing angle measures in various quadrilater

Chapter 3 – Understanding Quadrilaterals

Exercise 3.1
1. Given here are some figures.

Classify each of them on the basis of following.

a. Simple curve
Ans: Given: the figures (1) to (8)
We need to classify the given figures as simple curves.
We know that a curve that does not cross itself is referred to as a simple curve.
Therefore, simple curves are 1, 2, 5, 6, 7.
b. Simple closed curve

Class VIII Maths www.vedantu.com 1

We need to classify the given figures as simple closed curves.
We know that a simple closed curve is one that begins and ends at the same point
without crossing itself.
Therefore, simple closed curves are 1, 2, 5, 6, 7.
c. Polygon
Ans: Given: the figures (1) to (8)
We need to classify the given figures as polygon.
We know that any closed curve consisting of a set of sides joined in such a way
that no two segments cross is known as a polygon.
Therefore, the polygons are 1, 2.
d. Convex polygon
Ans: Given: the figures (1) to (8)
We need to classify the given figures as convex polygon.
We know that a closed shape with no vertices pointing inward is called a convex
polygon.
Therefore, the convex polygon is 2 .
e. Concave polygon
Ans: Given: the figures (1) to (8)
We need to classify the given figures as concave polygon.
We know that a polygon with at least one interior angle greater than 180 degrees is
called a concave polygon.
Therefore, the concave polygon is 1 .

2. How many diagonals does each of the following have?

(a) A convex quadrilateral
Ans: Given: a convex quadrilateral
We need to find the number of diagonals in the given quadrilateral
We know that a four-sided closed shape with no vertices pointing inward is called
a convex quadrilateral.

Class VIII Maths www.vedantu.com 2

Consider, a convex quadrilateral

Now, make diagonals

Therefore, a convex quadrilateral has 2 diagonals.

(b) A regular hexagon
Ans: Given: A regular hexagon
We need to find the number of diagonals of a regular hexagon.
We know that a regular hexagon is a closed curve with six equal sides.
Consider, a regular hexagon

Therefore, a regular hexagon has 9 diagonals.

(c) A triangle

Therefore, a triangle does not have any diagonal.

3. What is the sum of the measures of the angles of a convex quadrilateral?

Will this property hold if the quadrilateral is not convex? (Make a non-convex
quadrilateral and try!)
Ans: Given: A convex quadrilateral
We need to find the sum of the measures of the angles of a convex quadrilateral.
Will this property hold if the quadrilateral is not convex?
Consider, a convex quadrilateral ABCD and then make a diagonal AD.

We know that the sum of angles of a triangle is 180 .

So, In ACD
Sum of angles of ACD is 180
Now, In ABD
Sum of angles of ABD is 180 .
Therefore, sum of angles of a convex quadrilateral will be sum of angles of ACD
and ABD  180  180 = 360
Now, consider a concave quadrilateral ABCD, and then make a diagonal AC. The
quadrilateral ABCD is made of two triangles, ACD and ABC .

Class VIII Maths www.vedantu.com 4

Consider, ACD
The sum of angles of the triangle are 180 .
Now, consider ABC
The sum of the angles of triangle are 180 .
Therefore, sum of the angles of quadrilateral ABCD will be
 180  180  360
Thus, we can say that the property hold true for a quadrilateral which is not convex
because a quadrilateral can be divided into two triangles.

4. Examine the table. (Each figure is divided into triangles and the sum of the
angles deduced from that.)

Angle 4 180

180  (4  2) 180  (5  2) 180
sum  (6  2) 180

What can you say about the angle sum of a convex polygon with number of

a. 7
Ans: Given: the table
We need to observe table and make a statement about the angle sum of a convex
polygon with number of sides.
From table, we can observe that the angle sum of a convex polygon with n sides is
(n  2) 180.

Therefore, the angle sum of a convex polygon with 7 number of sides will be
 (7  2) 180

 5 180
 900
b. 8
Ans: Given: the table

We know that the sum of all interior angles of a quadrilateral is 360.
Thus,
50  130  120 + x  360
 300  x  360  x  360  300

 y  90

Now, the quadrilateral has angles, 70 ,60 ,90 ,x

We know that sum of all interior angles of a quadrilateral is 360.
Thus,
70  60  90 + x  360

Therefore, the angles of the pentagon are 30 ,x,110 ,120 ,x
We know that the sum of all interior angles of a pentagon is 540.
Thus,
30  x  110  120  x  540

(a) Find x  y  z
Ans: Given:

We need to find the value of x  y  z

Property Used:
 A linear pair can be defined as two adjacent angles that add up to 180 , or

Using Linear pair,
z  30  180

two angles that combine to form a line or right angle.
 Sum of all the interior angles of a quadrilateral is 360 .

Class VIII Maths www.vedantu.com 13

Thus,
a  60  80  120  360
 a  260  360
 a  360  260
 a  100
Using Linear pair,

 x  60
Again, using Linear pair
y  80  180

 y  180  80

 y  100

Again, using Linear pair

z  60  180
 z  180  60

are parallel.
If a transversal line intersects two specified lines in such a way that the sum of the
angles on the same side of the transversal equals 180 , the two lines will be parallel
to each other.
Here, NML  MLK  180
Hence, NM || LK
Hence, the given figure is a trapezium.

11. Find mC in the following figure if AB CD .

Ans: Given: AB CD and quadrilateral

We need to find the measure of C

B  C  180 (Angles on the same side of transversal).

120  C  180
C  60

Ans: Given: SP RQ and

We need to find the measure of P and S .

The sum of angles on the same side of transversal is 180.
P  Q  180

P  130  180
P  50
Also,
R  S  180
90  S  180
S  90
Yes, we can find the measure of mP by using one more method.
