EENG451-sample Q

The document contains 5 sample questions for a final exam on high voltage techniques. Question 1 has 4 parts that involve calculating voltages, field strengths, and ratios using a two-layer bushing system with given radii, lengths, dielectric constants, and applied voltage. Question 2 asks to determine electric field magnitudes using finite difference methods. Question 3 involves calculating constants from an ionization coefficient equation and breakdown voltage curve for a gas. Question 4 involves filling in a table with values calculated using another ionization coefficient equation for different gap distances and atmospheric conditions. Question 5 asks to use the Charge Simulation Method to determine potential and field at a point near a charged spherical conductor.

Sample questions for final exam

Q1) For a two-layered bushing, radii of cylinders are r1 = 1 cm, r2 = 3 cm and r3= 5 cm and relative dielectric
constants of layers are εr1 = 3.1 and εr2 = 1.3, respectively. The length of layers are l1 = 60 cm, l2 = 50 cm . If
the applied voltage is 100 kV :
a) Calculate voltages across each layer.

b) Calculate maximum field strengths across each layer.

c) Is this system uniformly stressed? Why?

d) Assume that the radii of cylinders are constant and also material of layers cannot be changed. Find

Q2) Determine the magnitude of electric field at the free nodes in the potential system of figure, using
the finite difference method.

Q3) The first ionization coefficient for a gas is approximately given by 𝛼 = 𝐴𝑝 𝑒 𝐸 , where p is
pressure in Torr and E is electric field in V/cm. The breakdown voltage curve (Paschen Curve) of
this gas is given as figure. Suppose that the second ionization coefficient for this gas is =0.002.
