    I. Report the following using the past simple of the verb in brackets.
    a) “Put your bags in the car!” he said to me. (tell)

    II. Change the statements into reported speech.

    a) “I am a sales agent.” He said that he was a sales agent.


    b) “We’re not staying in a fancy hotel.” They said that they were staying
    in a fancy hotel.
    c) “Juan is moving to his new job next week.” She said that Juan was
    moving to his new job the following week.
    d) “I’ll need an interpreter.” She said that she would need an interpreter.
    e) “Celine is working in London today.” Nicola said that Celine was
    working in London that day.
    f) “I can’t read the writing on the board.” The boy said that he could not
    read the writing on the board.
    g) “We’ll phone on Saturday.” They said that we they would phone on
    that Saturday.
    h) “I will show the visitors round the factory tomorrow.” The sales
    manager said he would show the visitors round the factory the
    following day.
    i) “I didn’t work the early shift on Sunday.” Tom said that he had not
    worked the early shift on that Sunday.

    III. Change the direct questions into reported questions.

    a) “What’s your name?” She asked me what my name was.


    b) “Did you take part in the sales conference last year?” He wanted to
    know if I took part in the sales conference last year.
    c) “Where do you come from?” They asked us where did we come from.
    d) “When are you both leaving?” He wanted to know when were w both
    leaving.
    e) “Did you like the idea of a joint venture?” The reporter asked the
    CEO
    if he had liked the idea of a joint venture.
    f) “Did you go to London first?” She asked me if I had gone to London
    first.
    g) “How old are you?” The reporter asked me how old was I.
    h) “Have they signed the contract?” The manager asked me if they had
    signed the contract.
    “Will you need to go back again?” She asked Jake if he would need to
    get back again.
