Math 5 Q3 Week 3

This mathematics module covers polygons, including: 1. Visualizing, naming, describing, and drawing polygons with 5 or more sides as well as differentiating between regular and irregular polygons. 2. Describing and comparing the properties of regular and irregular polygons. 3. Visualizing congruent polygons by identifying which polygons have equal corresponding sides and angles. The module provides activities to identify polygons, determine if they are regular or irregular, and determine if shapes are congruent. It defines key terms like sides, vertices, regular and irregular polygons, and congruent polygons. The goal is for students to master concepts related to advanced polygons.

Introduction of the Topic

POLYGONS
A Polygon is a plane figure whose sides are all line segments. It is defined as a
closed geometric figure formed by joining line segments which intersect exactly with
two other sides at a vertex. The word Polygon is derived from two Greek words poly
which means “many” and gon which means “angle”.
TERMS
Sides- One of the line segments that make up a Polygon
Vertex- The intersection of two endpoints
There are different kinds of polygons that are named according to the number of
their sides.

REGULAR AND IRREGULAR POLYGONS

REGULAR POLYGONS

Polygons having the same measure or congruent in angles are called

equiangular while polygons having congruent sides or the same in
length are called equilateral. Regular polygons are both equilateral and
equiangular.
Illustration below are Regular Polygons.

IRREGULAR POLYGONS
Polygons that have sides of different lengths and angles of different
measures are Irregular figures.
Illustration below are Irregular Polygons.

MATH 5 QUARTER 3 WEEK 3 4

CONGRUENT POLYGONS
Study the figures shown below.

Figure 1 Figure 2

Which of the figures above are considered congruent to each other?

What are the conditions for the two polygons to be considered

congruent?

When we placed two polygons in Figure 1 and Figure 2 over the top of
the other, we found out that the two polygons in Figure 1 have the
same shape but different in size, while the two trapezoids in Figure 2
are identical and fit exactly with each other. We can say that they are
congruent or equal in size and shape.

Figure 2

Two Geometric figures are considered congruent if they are the same
size and shape. Therefore, two figures having the same number in
sides, the same corresponding angles and corresponding sides are
congruent. The symbol ≅ is used to show congruence.

Let us try other figures.

MATH 5 QUARTER 3 WEEK 3 5

Two arrows face in the opposite direction and two parallelograms lie
horizontally and the other lies vertically with the same number of
sides, lengths, and shapes relative to the other, so the above figures
are congruent.
Congruence is not affected by orientation, or the direction that a
polygon faces.

Remember

Polygon is a closed geometric figure formed by two joining line segments which
intersects exactly with two other sides at a vertex.
Regular Polygons are polygons having the same measure in sides and congruent in
angles.

Irregular Polygons are polygons that have sides of different length and angles.

Congruent Polygons are two figures having an equal measure in their corresponding
angles and corresponding sides.
