Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions,
directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to
understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each
SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if
you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer

activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how

A warm welcome dear pupil for the fifth module in English 4!
This contains discussions and activities that will enhance your
knowledge in using appropriate graphic organizers in text read. You
will be introduced to three commonly used graphic organizers
that are appropriate to most of the text types in reading.

This module also aims to capacitate you in organizing


information or ideas through visualizing those in a more
comprehensive way.

The world is full of animals in different sizes. They can be


very small, but these insects can be easily seen like ladybugs,

gorillas, and elephants. They make the world a more

WHAT IS IT
GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS IN TEXT READ
Reading texts have different types. Some common text types
are compare and contrast, sequence, and cause and effect.
Graphic organizer on the other hand, is an aid or help to
make ideas clearly visible. It is a visual and graphic display that

depicts the relationships between facts, terms, and or ideas in a
text read.
Here are examples of some common graphic organizers.
1. CAUSE-AND-EFFECT DIAGRAM
Effects of Irregular Tooth Brushing

Effect: Tooth ache


Cause:
Irregular Effect: Tooth decay

Effect: Tooth extraction

The big box on the left serves as the cause box where you
are going to place the reason why something happens.
The three small boxes on the right are the effect boxes
where you are going to place the results to what happens. They
have no specific number as they only depend to the possible
outcomes or consequences of the cause.
Pictures or colors may also be added to the boxes to make
ideas more creative and visible.
Arrows show connection of the cause to its possible effects.

2. SEQUENCE CHART

The boxes in sequence chart show a series of steps or events


in the order in which they take place. They may be colored, may
contain pictures or be changed for creativity.

Arrows determine the specific flow of the steps or events.
They complete the meaning of the sequence chart by showing the
order of steps or events from the initial up to the final.

The portion where the circles joined or united is used to


define or enumerate common or similar characteristics of the
concepts.
The portion of the circles that do not meet or unite are used
to define or enumerate contrasts or differences of the concepts.
