Now, read the poem silently.

My Mother Dear

Who brought me to this world

To see the wonder works of God
And enjoy life to the fullest?

Who puts her arms around me

During chilly evenings
To make me feel warm?

Who is in great pain

When I am in sorrow
As if a dagger is thrust into her heart?

Who tell me stories at night

And caresses me as I fall asleep,
Till I dream of beautiful things?

Who is there at my side

Whenever I am sick?
She is awake all night.

Who plays with me

To brighten my day?
She never counts the hours
Till her tired body drops.

Who offers her life
For the sake of her child;
Not thinking of herself;
Not thinking of what it may take?
The woman who gave me this life,
My dearest mother, whom I love so much.

Congratulations! You read it well.

Let’s get started with the discussion.
What is going on in this poem?
What does the line, “put her arms around me” refer to?
Why does the speaker thankful to his/ her mother?
If you were the speaker, would you have done the same?
Why do we need to value our mother?
What do you think is the speaker’s tone, mood or purpose in the
poem?
A. He/ She is happy.
B. He/ She is feeling loved and cared by his/her mother.
C. He/ She wants to show her appreciation to his/her mother.

Letter B is the speaker’s tone, mood or purpose in the poem.

Children, these are what we call inferring the speaker’s
tone, mood or purpose.
When we make an inference, we draw a conclusion based on
the evidence that we have available. When we
make inferences while reading, we are using the evidence that is
available in the text to draw a logical conclusion. The writer or
speaker does not come out and state the answer to the question
that we are asking of the text-rather, we have to use the evidence
that is there to make an informed statement to answer whatever
question we are asking.

Speaker
A speaker is the character who narrates or is the voice
assumed by the writer. There are three general purposes that all
speeches fall into:

● To inform - is to give someone information about

something.
Example: Vitamin C is good for our immune system.
● To persuade – is to try to convince someone to think the
same way you do.
Example: If you do good in school, you will be rewarded in the
future.
● To entertain - means to amuse someone.
Example: James: What did the bald man exclaim when he
received a comb for a present?
Tom: What?
James: Thanks, I’ll never part with it!
Tone
Is the emotional attitude or it creates the mood and emotion.
It expresses the attitude the author has towards the subject or
topic of the poem.
Examples: ironic, playful, sarcastic, sincere
• I’d rather stay here and wait, than go into that dark room.
– The sentence above imposes that the person is scared.
Mood
Is defined in poetry as the feelings or emotions that are
evoked in the reader by the poem.
Generally speaking, any word that can be used to describe
emotion can be used to describe the mood of a story, poem, or
other piece of writing. The following are examples of moods that a
text can cause the reader to feel:

NegOr_Q3_English4_Module6_v2
6
Cheerful Angry Anxious
Gloomy Fearful Suspicious
Humorous Tense Excited
Romantic Lonely Depressed
Calm Suspense Scared
Lighthearted Happy Disgusted
Hopeful Angry

Example: The night was dark and stormy.

– The sentence gives you a scary ‘mood’ (or feeling).

A single piece of writing can and usually does employ more

than one mood since different parts of the same work can have
different moods but works are generally characterized by a single
overarching mood. So, for instance, a story that has happy
passages and sad passages might not be defined by either mood,
but rather by its overall mood of humorousness.

Inferring the speaker’s tone, mood or purpose may be done by

determining the purpose of the author in writing the poem or
selection. It may be done through keen observation on the way the
speaker’s read the lines and through analyzing of the words used
in the poem or selection.

Tone= Person – Attitude Mood= Environment

What is the tone of the poem?

Remember, the tone simply refers to how the author feels towards
the subject. You will know this by just implying by the words the
speaker uses.

NegOr_Q3_English4_Module6_v2
7
How about the mood? What makes you feel when you read this
poem?
How about the purpose? What do you think is the purpose of the
writer in writing this poem?
Congratulations, you have made it!
